Semi-Cured Gel Nails vs Salon Shellac
Shellac has long been a salon favourite for long-wearing colour, but semi-cured gel nail wraps offer a comparable finish without the appointment, and there are a few real differences worth knowing before you choose.
Time and convenience
A full set of semi-cured wraps takes around 15 minutes to apply and cure at home, no booking, no travel, no sitting in a salon chair while your colour sets. Shellac requires a salon visit each time, which adds up over a year of regular manicures.
Removal
Shellac is generally removed by soaking in pure acetone, often with foil wraps, for around 10 to 15 minutes. Semi-cured wraps are removed gently with oil: lift the edge, apply cuticle oil, and ease the wrap off. No acetone soak required.
Wear and cost
Both options last around two weeks with proper application and care. The main difference is cost: one set of semi-cured wraps is a fraction of the price of a single shellac appointment, and you can reapply as often as you like without booking ahead.
