Inspired by the Seven Sisters Festival โ silver moons, scattered stars, and a deep violet base A few weeks ago, I was getting ready for Seven Sisters Festival and wanted my nails to match the vibe โ feminine, a little bit witchy, and properly celestial. What I ended up with: a different design on every nail. Silver moons on some, scattered stars on others, fine silver lines on the rest, all over a deep, shimmery violet base. It looked like wearing a little night sky on my hands. And the best part? It's much easier than it looks. This is the first post in our new Nail Art Tutorials series โ bringing you the looks we wear ourselves, step-by-step, with everything you need to recreate them at home. Let's get into it. ย ย The look at a glance - Base: Violet Luster Semi-Cured Gel Nailsโ a deep, shimmery purple with subtle holographic flecks- Accents: A mix of Silver Moons, Silver Stars, and freehand details using Silver Gel Liner- Finish: Gloss Top Coat for that wet-look celestial shine- Time: Around 30 minutes from start to finish- Skill level: Beginner-friendly โ no freehand drawing required The whole point of this look is that no two nails need to match. You can scatter the elements however feels right to you. That's part of the charm. Photo: Violet Moon Nail Art Bundle ย ย What you'll need Everything in the Violet Moon Nail Art Bundle โ designed to give you exactly what you need to recreate this look at home: - 1 set of Violet Luster Semi-Cured Gel Nails- 1 sheet of Silver Moons Nail Art Decals- 1 sheet of Silver Stars Nail Art Decals- 1 Silver Gel Liner- 1 Gloss Top Coat- 1 pair of Precision Tweezers โ the secret weapon for clean sticker placement Plus, you'll also want: - A UV LED lamp- Cuticle oil and a wooden cuticle stick for prep Shop the Violet Moon Bundle โ ย ย Step-by-step: How to create the Violet Moonlight look Step 1 โ Prep your nails Start with clean, oil-free nails:- Push back your cuticles (we've got a full guide here)- Wipe each nail with a prep wipe or rubbing alcohol- File and shape if neededGood prep makes the difference between a 5-day look and a 2-week look. Don't skip it. Step 2 โ Apply your Violet Luster wraps Apply your Violet Luster Semi-Cured Gel Nails as normal:- Match each wrap to the size of your nail- Press firmly from cuticle to tip- Smooth out any air bubbles- File away the excess at the tips Don't cure yet โ we're going to add the stickers first, before the final top coat cure. If you're new to applying our semi-cured wraps, our Semi-Cured Gel Nails How To tutorial is a perfect refresher. Step 3 โ Place your moon and star stickers Here's where it gets fun. Using your Precision Tweezers, gently remove a sticker from the sheet and place it where you like on the nail. Some ideas from how I styled mine: - Ring finger: a single crescent moon, centred- Middle finger: one larger star and one smaller star, scattered- Index finger: two or three tiny stars near the tip- Pinky: a single accent moon or star- Thumb: clean (or add a star if you like the symmetry) There's no wrong way to do it. Mix moons and stars however you fancy. The slightly random placement is what gives it that effortless celestial look. Press each sticker firmly into place โ the rubber end of the Precision Tweezers is brilliant for this. Step 4 โ Add fine silver gel liner details On the nails where you didn't add stickers (or to add to the ones you did), use your Silver Gel Liner to add: - Fine vertical streaks (like falling starlight)- Tiny silver dots scattered like distant stars- A small cluster of lines near the cuticle for a subtle accent Less is more here. A few quick strokes is all you need. The liner is forgiving โ you can wipe back any mistakes with a wooden stick before curing. You can cure between fingers if you're worried about smudging. Cure your gel liner under your UV LED lamp (60 seconds is usually plenty) before moving to the top coat. If gel liner is new to you, the application videos on our nail art page walk you through the technique. Step 5 โ Seal with Gloss Top Coat Apply a thin layer of Gloss Top Coat over each nail. Make sure you go all the way over your stickers and gel liner โ sealing everything in is what makes this set last even longer than 2+ weeks. Press the brush flat against the nail and sweep from cuticle to tip. Avoid going back and forth โ one smooth pass is best. Step 6 โ Final cure Pop your hands back under the UV LED lamp for one final cure. 60 seconds and you're done. Step 7 โ Enjoy Step back, admire, and start mentally planning what you're wearing with them. Your Violet Moonlight set is complete. ย ย Why this look works Three things make this design feel polished even though it's beginner-friendly: 1. The base does the heavy lifting. Violet Luster's deep, shimmery finish creates a "night sky" canvas that makes any silver accent look intentional. 2. Mismatched nails are the point. You're not trying to make all ten match โ you're creating a scattered, celestial feel. That's why it works on any skill level. 3. Stickers + liner = layered detail without the freehand pressure. Stickers give you the clean shapes, liner adds the organic lines. Together they look like a much more advanced manicure than they actually are. ย ย Quick recap - Apply Violet Luster wraps as normal- Place silver moons and stars with precision tweezers- Add freehand silver liner details on remaining nails- Cure the gel liner under your UV lamp- Seal with a thin layer of Gloss Top Coat- Final cure and enjoy Around 30 minutes from start to finish. Lasts 2+ weeks. Looks like you spent an afternoon at a salon. ย ย Shop the Violet Moon Bundle Everything you need to recreate this look at home, in one bundle:Violet Luster Semi-Cured Gel Nails, Silver Moons Nail Art Decals, Silver Stars Nail Art Decals, Silver Gel Liner, Gloss Top Coat, Precision Tweezers Shop the Violet Moon Bundle โ $100 Or browse our full Nail Art Range for more colours, liners, and sticker designs to mix and match. ย ย Violet Moonlight Tutorial FAQs How long does this look take to do? Around 30 minutes from start to finish, including prep, sticker placement, gel liner work, top coat, and curing. If it's your first time using gel liner or placing stickers, allow yourself a bit longer โ say 45 minutes โ so you're not rushing. โธป Can I do this look with UV-Free wraps instead of Semi-Cured? Not quite โ this specific look needs Semi-Cured wraps because:- The Silver Gel Liner needs to cure under a UV lamp- The Gloss Top Coat is also UV-cured If you don't have a UV lamp, you can still get a beautiful celestial look using UV-Free wraps + stickers only (skip the gel liner step, and use the stickers more generously). It won't have the freehand silver detail, but it'll still look gorgeous. โธป Do I need to use all three accent elements (gel liner + both sticker types)? Not at all. This look is endlessly customisable. You can simplify it by:- Using only the moons for a softer, lunar feel- Using only the stars for a more sparkle-forward look- Skipping the gel liner if you want pure sticker accents- Going liner-only if you prefer minimalism The bundle gives you all the elements so you can mix and match across multiple manis. โธป Will the stickers stay put through normal wear? Yes โ when you seal them with a thin layer of Gloss Top Coat and cure under your UV lamp, the stickers are locked in for the full life of the set (typically 2+ weeks with proper prep). The key is the top coat. Don't skip it. โธป Can I do this look without a UV lamp? Not exactly as shown โ the silver gel liner and gloss top coat both need UV curing. But you can absolutely create a celestial-inspired UV-Free version using:- A dark UV-Free base (try Ebony or Pacific Blue)- Silver Moon and Star stickers pressed firmly into place- A UV-Free finishing wipe or matte top option if available It won't have the fine liner detail, but it'll still look stunning. โธป What if I'm not confident with gel liner? Two tips that make all the difference: - Start light โ you can always add more strokes, but it's harder to take away- Wipe back mistakes with a wooden stick or cotton bud before you cure โ once it's under the lamp, it's set Or skip the liner entirely. The stickers alone give you a beautiful look. You can always practise the liner technique on a single nail next time. โธป Will this look damage my nails? No โ LA-BEK Semi-Cured Gel Nails (and our nail art) are gentle on your natural nails when applied and removed properly. For the gentlest removal, head to our step-by-step removal guideโ cuticle oil, patience, and no peeling. โธป Can I do this look on shorter nails? Absolutely โ and it actually translates beautifully to shorter nails. The scattered placement style means you don't need length to make it work. A few tweaks for short nails:- Use smaller stickers or fewer per nail- Keep the gel liner streaks shorter and finer- Place accents closer to the tip rather than the centre For more on adapting looks to shorter nails, Laura's Top Tips for Short Nails has you covered. โธป What festival or event is this look perfect for? Festival nails were the inspiration (mine were for Seven Sisters Festival), but this look works beautifully for:- Festivals + outdoor music events- New Year's Eve- Birthday dinners- Anytime you want to feel a little bit witchy It's not just a "going out" look โ the deep violet base means it's surprisingly wearable day-to-day too. ย ย Written by Laura & BekFounders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creating semi-cured gel nail wraps and UV-free gel nail wraps designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home.
Putting them on is the fun part. Taking them off shouldn't be the bit you dread. If you've ever ripped off a gel mani in a moment of weakness โ and felt your nails complain for the next two weeks โ we get it. We've all been there. The good news is, gel nail wraps are designed to come off gently. You just need the right method (and about five minutes). Here's how to do it properly, whether you've got our UV-Free or Semi-Cured wraps on. Before you start: what you'll need Set yourself up first. It makes the whole thing quicker and stops the "where's my cuticle oil?" mid-removal scramble. You'll need: - A wooden cuticle stick or our Glass Tools- Cuticle oil- A nail file or buffer- A few minutes of quiet (a podcast helps) That's it. No acetone soaks. No foil wrapping. No drama. Photo: Cuticle Oil Pen How to remove Gel Nail Wraps Gel wraps are designed to be flexible โ that's part of what makes them so easy to apply and so easy to take off. Step 1 โ Drop a tiny bit of cuticle oil at the base of the nail.Right where the wrap meets your skin. Let it sit for 30 seconds. The oil starts to gently lift the seal. Step 2 โ Slide your wooden stick (or glass tool) under the edge of the wrap.Start at one corner near the cuticle, not the tip. Work slowly. Step 3 โ Lift, don't yank. The wrap will start to peel up in one piece. If it resists, add another drop of oil and wait a few more seconds. Patience here is everything. Step 4 โ Buff away any leftover residue.A light buff with the soft side of a buffer is all you need. Don't over-file โ your nail underneath is happy and healthy. Step 5 โ Re-oil and moisturise.Cuticle oil + a hand cream and you're done. Clean nails, no damage, no fuss. Three removal mistakes to avoid We've seen these come up in customer chats more times than we can count, so here's what *not* to do: 1. The rip-and-go. Pulling a gel wrap straight off without oil takes a microscopic layer of your natural nail with it. Don't. 2. Picking at the edges.Same issue, just slower. Bored on a Zoom call? We see you. But step away from the nails. 3. Soaking in acetone for ages. Some people still do this out of habit from old-school gels. Our wraps don't need it. Acetone dries everything out โ your nails, your cuticles, your patience. If you ever feel like a wrap is stuck โ it's almost always because it needs more oil and a bit more time, not more force. Photo: Vixen Red Semi-cured Gel Nails After removal: a 60-second nail reset Whether you're going straight back into a fresh mani or giving your nails a breather, this little routine makes a big difference: - Cuticle oil worked into each cuticle to soften and rehydrate- Our Cuticle Balm worked over the whole nail and surrounding skin to restore and nourish โ it's the perfect "second step" after the oil sinks in, especially after wearing wraps for 1โ2 weeks- Hand cream all the way up to your wrists- A glass of water (your nails are basically thirsty plants) If you're applying a fresh set straight away, our How Do I Push Back My Cuticles guide is a perfect next read โ proper cuticle prep makes your next mani last noticeably longer. > Just remember: if you're going straight into a fresh set, wipe each nail thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or a prep wipe after the oil and balm have sunk in. Otherwise the moisturising layer that's so good for your nails between manis will stop your new wraps from sealing properly. Photo: Cuticle Balm Quick recap - Cuticle oil first. Always.- Lift from the cuticle corner โ never yank.- Patience beats pressure.- Buff lightly, re-oil, moisturise. Done.- No acetone needed for either UV-Free or Semi-Cured wraps. Salon-quality removal, minus the salon. Your nails get to come out the other side just as healthy as they went in. Need to restock your nail care essentials? Browse our Nail Care range for cuticle oil and prep essentials, or grab a Starter Kit if you want everything bundled. And if you're ready for a fresh set, the full UV-Free and Semi-Cured ranges are right here. Gel Wrap Removal FAQs How long does it take to remove gel nail wraps? When done properly, it's quick:- UV-Free wraps: around 3โ5 minutes for both hands- Semi-Cured wraps: around 5โ8 minutes for both hands The biggest factor is patience. Letting cuticle oil do its job for a minute or two upfront saves you time โ and your nails โ later. โธป Do I need acetone to remove gel nail wraps? No. This is one of the biggest differences between LA-BEK gel nail wraps and traditional salon gel. Acetone dries out:- Your natural nails- Your cuticles- The skin around your nails Our wraps are designed to come off with cuticle oil and a wooden stick โ gently, and without harsh chemicals. Save the acetone for when you genuinely need it. โธป Can I just peel my gel wraps off? Technically yes โ and you might get away with it sometimes โ but we really don't recommend it. Peeling without oil:- Removes the top layer of your natural nail- Can cause peeling, thinning, or weakness over time- Often hurts (your nail is telling you something) The cuticle oil step takes 30 seconds. Use it. Your nails will thank you. โธป What do I do if my gel wrap is really stuck? If a wrap won't lift, the answer is almost always more oil and more time โ not more force. Try:- Adding extra cuticle oil and waiting another 1โ2 minutes- For semi-cured wraps, doing a light pass with a 180-grit file to break the surface- Working slowly from a different corner If it still won't budge, walk away for 10 minutes. Come back and try again. Forcing it is the only way you'll damage your nail. โธป How often should I remove and reapply my gel wraps? It depends on your wear:- UV-Free wraps: typically last 7โ10 days- Semi-Cured wraps: typically last up to 2+ weeks When you start to notice lifting at the edges or visible regrowth at the cuticle line, it's time for a fresh set. Most people remove and reapply every 1โ2 weeks. If you have particularly thin or weak nails, taking a 1โ2 week break every few months is a lovely reset. โธป Will removing my wraps damage my natural nails? Done properly โ no. Our wraps are designed to come off without taking your natural nail with them. The damage people associate with "gel nails" almost always comes from one of three things:- Peeling without oil- Filing too aggressively after removal- Repeated acetone soaks (with traditional salon gels, not our wraps) Use cuticle oil, lift gently, and buff lightly. Your nails will be fine. โธป Can I apply a fresh set of wraps straight after removing? Yes โ but only if your nails are completely clean and oil-free. Best practice:1. Remove your existing wraps2. Buff lightly to smooth the surface3. Wipe each nail thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or a prep wipe (this is crucial โ you've just put cuticle oil everywhere)4. Apply your fresh set Skipping the alcohol wipe is one of the most common reasons brand-new wraps lift early. โธป What's the gentlest way to remove if I'm short on time? If you have to rush:- Apply cuticle oil generously and rub it in for 30 seconds- Use the warmth of your other hand to help the oil sink in faster- Lift slowly with a wooden stick from the cuticle corner Don't be tempted to skip the oil entirely just because you're in a hurry โ even 30 seconds with oil is better than going in dry. Your future self will thank you. โธป Written by Laura & BekFounders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creating semi-cured gel nail wraps and UV-free gel nail wraps designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home.
You spend fifteen minutes on a fresh set, you love how they look, and then by day threeโฆ one corner starts to lift. By day four, you're mentally pricing your next set. If this is you, take a breath. Lifting is the single most common at-home gel question, and the answer is almost always one small thing. Once you spot which one it is, your next mani will hold the way it's supposed to. Here are the 6 most common reasons your wraps are lifting โ and the small tweak that fixes each one. 1. Your nails weren't fully clean This is the number one culprit, by a mile. Even if your nails look clean, there's almost always a thin layer of natural oils sitting on the surface. That tiny film stops the wrap from sealing properly โ and within a day or two, the edges start to creep up. The fix: Wipe each nail with a lint-free wipe and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol right before you apply. No moisturiser, no hand cream, no oils on your nails for 30 minutes prior. Then go straight in. 2. You skipped pushing back your cuticles If a wrap is sitting on top of your cuticle even slightly, it's basically lifting from day one. The cuticle is soft tissue โ it moves, it shifts, and it'll lift the wrap with it. The fix: Gently push back your cuticles before applying. We've got a step-by-step on cuticle care here if you want the full walkthrough. It takes 30 extra seconds and adds days to your wear. Photo: Glass Cuticle Pusher 3. You applied the wrap too close to the cuticle This sounds counterintuitive โ surely closer = neater? โ but it's the opposite. If a wrap is butting right up against your cuticle line, even the smallest cuticle growth (and cuticles grow surprisingly fast) will push under the edge and start lifting it. The fix: Leave a tiny gap โ about half a millimetre โ between the wrap and your cuticle. You won't see the gap once your nail looks finished, but it gives the wrap somewhere to sit without wrestling with your skin. Photo: Pacific Blue UV-Free Gel Nails 4. You filed toward the wrap, not away from it If you file the tip downward (away from the nail bed) you're essentially pulling the wrap edge up with every pass. After a few sessions, you've created a tiny lip that's begging to lift. The fix: File in one direction only โ from the side toward the centre tip โ and use a downward motion over the edge of the nail, not against it. Light pressure. Quick passes. We've got more on this in our filing tips post. Photo: Glass Nail File 5. Your top coat / seal wasn't done properly For our Semi-Cured wraps: the lift usually means the wrap wasn't fully cured. Either the lamp wasn't held close enough, the time was too short, or the wrap wasn't pressed completely flat before curing. Any of these can leave a soft spot at the edge that gives way later. The fix: When curing, get the lamp right above your hand (about 2cm), cure the full recommended time, and press each wrap firmly with your finger pad before you start curing โ especially around the edges and the cuticle line. For our UV-Free wraps: lift usually means the wrap wasn't pressed in firmly enough during application. They're already cured โ they just need to bond properly to your nail. The fix: After you've applied each wrap, take a wooden stick or your thumb and press firmly around the entire edge โ especially at the cuticle and along the sides. Twenty seconds of extra pressing per nail will save you a week of lifting. Photo: Gloss Top Coat 6. The edges weren't pressed firmly enough to seal Even if everything else has been done well, gel nail wraps will lift at the edges if those edges weren't sealed properly during application. The edge is where lifting starts โ so it's the part that needs the most care. The fix during application: After applying each wrap, take a wooden cuticle stick or the rubber end of our Precision Tweezers and firmly press around the entire edge โ at the cuticle, down both sides, and along the tip. Real, deliberate pressure for a few seconds on each edge. Don't rush this step. It's the difference between a 5-day mani and a 2-week one. Already lifting? You can rescue an early-stage lifting edge before it gets worse: - Gently warm the lifting area with a hairdryer on a low setting (around 30 seconds, held about 15cm from your nail)- Press the edge firmly back down with a wooden stick or the rubber end of your tweezers- Hold the pressure for 10โ20 seconds while it cools and re-bonds The warmth softens the gel just enough to re-seal it to the nail. It's a clever little fix that's saved a lot of manicures around here. Photo: Precision Tweezers 7. Day-to-day damage (heat, soaking, picking) Sometimes the wrap was applied perfectly โ and then real life got in the way. The biggest culprits: - Long hot showers soften the gel edges- Doing the dishes without gloves is genuinely the enemy of a long-lasting mani- Picking at a corner because you're bored on a call (yes, we see you)- Heat tools held against your nails (curling irons, hairdryers up close) The fix: Pop on washing-up gloves for hot water tasks, keep showers shorter when you can, and apply cuticle oil dailyโ moisturised cuticles seal the wrap edge and dramatically reduce lifting from outside damage. Photo: Pixie Dust UV-Free Gel Nails Quick diagnostic: which fix is yours? If your wraps liftโฆ - Within the first 24-48 hours โ it's almost always #1 (oils on the nail), #5 (poor seal/cure), or #6 (edges not pressed firmly)- Around the cuticle area โ it's #2 (cuticles not pushed back), #3 (applied too close), or #6 (cuticle edge not sealed properly)- At the tip / free edge โ it's #4 (filing direction), #6 (tip edge not sealed), or #7 (heat / hot water)- Suddenly all at once โ check your application. One of #1, #2, #5 or #6 is the likely answer. Most lifting is fixable with one small change next time. Don't write off your wraps โ write off one habit. A quick note on when wraps are simply at the end of their life If your wraps have been on for two weeks, you've washed your hair, done dishes, exercised, and lived your lifeโฆ and they're starting to lift gently? That's not a failure. That's them telling you they've done their job and it's time for a fresh set. The goal isn't forever. It's a beautiful, comfortable two weeks. Quick recap - Clean, oil-free nails before applying โ every time- Push back cuticles- Leave a tiny gap at the cuticle line- File from side to centre, not against the edge- Press firmly (UV-Free) or cure properly (Semi-Cured)- Seal the edges with a wooden stick or the rubber end of your tweezers โ and rescue any early lifting with a quick hairdryer warm + press- Protect with cuticle oil and washing-up gloves Salon-quality longevity, minus the salon. The fixes are small. The difference is huge. Want everything you need for your next set in one place? Gel Nail Wrap Lifting FAQs Why do my gel nail wraps lift after just a few days? Early lifting (within 24โ48 hours of application) is almost always one of three things:โข Natural oils were left on the nail before applyingโข The wrap wasn't fully cured (semi-cured) or pressed in firmly enough (UV-free)โข The wrap was touching skin or the cuticle The fix is small. Wipe each nail with rubbing alcohol or a prep wipe right before you apply, and press each wrap firmly around the cuticle and edges before curing or moving on. Ensure application doesn't touch any skin or cuticle surface. โธป Can I fix a lifting gel wrap without redoing the whole thing? Sometimes, yes โ if it's caught early. If only a corner or edge is lifting:โข Wipe the area with a tiny bit of alcohol on a cotton budโข Press it firmly back down with a wooden stickโข Apply a top coat over the whole nail to re-seal it If the whole wrap is lifting or there's a bubble underneath, it's better to remove that one and reapply. โธป How can I make my gel nail wraps last 2 weeks? Two weeks is realistic โ but only with the basics dialled in:โข Push back your cuticles before applyingโข Clean and oil-free nails right before you startโข Press each wrap firmly around the edgesโข Apply daily cuticle oil after applicationโข Wear washing-up gloves for hot water tasks Skipping any one of these is usually the difference between a 5-day mani and a 14-day one. โธป Is lifting more common with UV-free or semi-cured gel wraps? Both can lift if applied incorrectly, but for different reasons. Semi-cured wraps lift most often because of:โข Under-curing (lamp too far away or not enough time)โข Not enough pressure during application UV-free wraps lift most often because of:โข Not pressed firmly enough into the nailโข Applied over slightly oily nails The fixes are quick once you know which type you've got. โธป Does cuticle oil cause wraps to lift? Cuticle oil applied before you put on a fresh set can absolutely cause lifting โ that's why we say to apply on clean, oil-free nails. But cuticle oil applied after the wraps are on (and ideally daily) actually helps them last longer. It keeps your cuticles healthy so they don't push up against the wrap edge and lift it. โธป Do I need to use a top coat with semi-cured wraps? A top coat isn't always essential, but it does:โข Add extra shineโข Improve resistance to chipping at the tipsโข Add a few extra days of wear in many cases If you regularly find your wraps lift at the tips first, a quality top coat is a small upgrade that often makes a noticeable difference. โธป Why does only one finger keep lifting? Usually it's one of three things:โข That nail's cuticle area was less prepped (oil left behind, or cuticle not pushed back)โข That wrap wasn't pressed in as firmlyโข That hand does more "wear and tear" โ your dominant hand often lifts first Watch how you use your hands across a normal day. Often the answer is right there. โธป Can hot water make my gel wraps lift? Yes โ long hot showers, baths, and dishwashing in hot water are some of the biggest day-to-day causes of lifting. The heat softens the gel edges over time, which makes them easier to lift away from the nail. The fix:โข Pop on washing-up gloves for hot water tasksโข Keep showers a little shorter when you canโข Avoid soaking your hands in hot baths for long periods Small habit changes, much longer-lasting nails. Some collabs just feel right. When Sue and Chef Gigi from Gigi's Gelato โ the Yarraville gelateria that's quietly become one of Melbourne's best-kept Italian secrets โ reached out about doing something together, we said yes before they'd finished asking. They're obsessed with quality. We're obsessed with quality. They make their gelato from scratch with no chemicals or artificial flavours. We make gel nail wraps that don't compromise on what goes near your skin. A Saturday morning that brings the two together? It almost wrote itself. What's happening Self-care meets sweet treats in a once-off pre-Mother's Day morning at Gigi's Gelato in Yarraville. We're sharing an Italian-style morning tea โ affogato (fior di latte gelato with a shot of espresso) paired with freshly baked cookies by Chef Gigi โ while introducing you to LA-BEK's gel nail wraps with a live demo on how to get a salon-quality mani in just 10 minutes. Bring your mum. Bring your bestie. Or just yourself. Honestly โ the morning works either way. BOOK YOUR TICKETS Photo: Gigi's Strawberry Sorbet UV-free Gel Nail Wraps, Gigi's Blueberry UV-free Gel Nail Wraps, Gigi's Chocolate UV-free Gel Nail Wraps, And about those new coloursโฆ To celebrate the collab, we've launched three brand-new UV-Free shades named after some of Gigi's most-loved flavours. Gigi's Strawberry Sorbet A soft, sun-ripened pink with a fresh, fruit-forward feel. Inspired by Gigi's strawberry sorbet โ the one made with up to 70% real fruit. (Yes, really.) Gigi's Chocolate A warm, rich espresso-cream brown. The colour you'll want to wear with everything in winter and through into autumn. The mani equivalent of a really good affogato. Gigi's Blueberry A deep, moody blueberry-violet with a velvet finish. Unexpected, grown-up, and a little bit cheeky. Each ticket holder gets to take a set home (your choice of colour on the day). And yes โ the new shades are available online with limited stock. Why this collab Two reasons. The first is simple: Gigi's gelato is genuinely the best in Melbourne. Chef Gigi was the first Victorian gelateria to receive a double Slow Food Snail of Approval โ the international recognition for "good, clean and fair food." We've always loved spaces that care this much about their craft. The second reason is bigger. So much of life as a busy woman is rushed. Quick meals. Quick beauty. Quick everything. We wanted to host a morning that's slow on purpose. Made for sitting down. Made for talking to the woman next to you. Made for a cookie that took someone time to bake and a coffee that took someone time to pour. Mother's Day weekend felt like the right moment to do that. Who it's for This morning is for: - Anyone wanting to do something a little different for Mother's Day weekend- Friends, sisters, mums โ solo or in a group- People curious about LA-BEK who want to see how the wraps work in person before buying- Locals who haven't yet experienced Gigi's (you're in for a treat)- Anyone who likes the sound of espresso, gelato, cookies and a fresh mani in one Saturday morning You don't need to bring anything other than yourself. We'll have everything set up for you. How to book Tickets are limited (the space is intimate โ that's part of the charm) and we expect them to go fast given the timing. If you can't make it on the day but you'd love to support the collab, the three new UV-Free colours are live on our site now. Mother's Day kits will also be available to purchase on the day. We'd really love to see you there. BOOK YOUR TICKETS Event FAQs Where exactly is the event held? The event is at Gigi's Gelato, 15 Anderson Street, Yarraville VIC 3013 โ a short walk from Yarraville train station, with on-street parking available nearby. โธป What time should I arrive? Doors open at 10.30am sharp. We recommend arriving a few minutes early so you can settle in with your affogato before the live demo starts. The morning wraps up at 12pm. โธป Can I bring my mum or a friend? Absolutely โ that's exactly what this morning was made for. Just make sure each person has their own $22 ticket so they're included in the affogato, cookie, and gel nail wrap set. You can also come solo โ many people will be. It's a warm, welcoming space. โธป Are the three new collab colours available online? The new Gigi's Strawberry Sorbet, Gigi's Chocolate and Gigi's Blueberry UV-Free wraps are available now. โธป What if I can't choose between the three colours? You'll only need to pick one as part of your ticket โ but the other two will be available to purchase on the day if you'd like the full set. (No judgement โ we'd probably want all three too.) โธป Is the event suitable for kids? The morning is designed for adults, but well-behaved older kids who'll enjoy gelato and watching a nail demo are welcome. There isn't a separate kids' price โ every guest needs a ticket. If you're bringing little ones, just be aware the space is intimate. โธป Can I buy a ticket as a Mother's Day gift? Yes โ and it makes a really beautiful one. A pre-Mother's Day morning out together, with everything taken care of (and a fresh set of nails to take home). When you book, you can either:โข Buy two tickets and surprise her with the morningโข Or send her the ticket details to book her own seat next to yours โธป What if it sells out? The space is small and tickets are limited, so it's likely to sell out quickly given the Mother's Day timing. If it does, the three new collab colours are still available to buy with limited stock โ so you won't miss the launch even if you miss the morning. โธป Is there parking nearby? Yes โ Anderson Street and the surrounding Yarraville Village area have on-street parking. Yarraville train station is also a 5-minute walk if you'd prefer to skip the parking entirely. If you've been doing gel nails at home (or sitting under a lamp at the salon) and recently saw something pop up about UV exposure โ you're not alone in wondering. It's a question that's been getting more airtime lately. And it's a fair one to ask. So instead of adding to the noise, we wanted to give you a calm, honest look at where the research actually sits, what you can do if you do use a UV lamp, and why we decided to launch our UV-Free range earlier this year. No scaremongering. Just real talk. Photo: UV Lamp Are UV nail lamps the same as a tanning bed? Short answer: no. The lamps used for gel manicures are LED-UV lamps. They're a much smaller dose of UV than a tanning bed, and the exposure time is short โ usually 60 -90 seconds per coat. But "less" doesn't mean "none." UV is still UV, and if you're applying gel regularly, that exposure can add up over time. What does the research say? Most of the recent attention came from a 2023 study out of UC San Diego that looked at the effect of nail-curing UV light on cells in a lab setting. The headlines made it sound dramatic. The study itself was more measured. Here's the honest summary: - The study was done on cells in a dish โ not on actual people.- It showed that UV from nail lamps can damage some cells with repeated, prolonged exposure.- It didn't establish that everyday gel manicures cause cancer.- More research is needed before there's a definitive answer. What the dermatology community generally agrees on right now is this: the risk from occasional gel manicures appears to be low, but it isn't zero. So a few simple precautions are worth taking. How can I reduce my UV exposure if I use a lamp? If you love your semi-cured gel wraps (and we get it โ they're hard to beat for strength and longevity), here's how to use the lamp more mindfully: - Pop on some SPF 30+ on the back of your hands about 20 minutes before you cure. A pea-sized amount on each hand is plenty.- Use UV-protective fingerless gloves โ they're cheap, they work, and they let your nails through to cure properly.- Keep your sessions efficient. Cure once per coat, exactly as long as the lamp instructions say. No "extra time just to be sure."- Take breaks between manis. Giving your nails (and your hands) a few days off between sets is good for everyone. This isn't about being paranoid. It's the same energy as wearing sunscreen on your face every day. A small, easy step for long-term peace of mind. Customer Photo: Cobalt Blue Semi-Cured Gel Nail Wraps Is there a way to do gel nails without a UV lamp? Yes. That's exactly why we launched our UV-Free Gel Nail Wraps earlier this year. They're real gel โ fully cured during manufacture โ so when you apply them at home, there's no lamp, no curing step, no UV exposure at all. Just peel, press, file and you're done. We didn't make them because the lamp is "bad." We made them because some people: - Don't want the UV exposure, full stop- Travel a lot and don't want to pack a lamp- Have sensitive skin or a medical reason to avoid UV- Just want a faster, simpler at-home mani Both options live on our site for a reason. They're for different people, different days, and sometimes the same person on different days. Photo: Pixie Dust UV-Free Gel Nails Soโฆ should I be worried? If you've been getting regular gel manicures for years, you don't need to panic. The current evidence doesn't suggest occasional gel manis are a high-risk activity. But it's a good prompt to think about how you protect your hands the same way you'd protect your face โ sunscreen, breaks, and not over-doing it. If you have a personal or family history of skin cancer, very fair skin, or any specific concerns about UV exposure, please have a quick chat with your GP or dermatologist. They can give you advice that's tailored to you. And if you'd just rather skip the lamp altogether? Now you can. Quick recap UV nail lamps emit UV, but a much smaller dose than a tanning bed.The 2023 lab study raised valid questions, but didn't prove that gel manicures cause cancer.- Sunscreen on hands and UV-protective gloves are simple, smart precautions if you do use a lamp.- Our UV-Free Gel Nail Wraps skip the lamp entirely โ same gel, no UV. Two ways to mani. Same LA-BEK quality. You get to choose what works for your real life. Want to see what a UV-free mani looks like up close? Browse the UV-Free Gel Nail Wraps range, explore the full gel nail wrap collection, or grab a UV-Free Starter Kit UV Nail Lamp FAQs Are UV nail lamps the same as a tanning bed? No. The lamps used for gel manicures emit a much smaller dose of UV than a tanning bed, and the exposure time is far shorter โ usually 30 to 60 seconds per coat. That said, UV is still UV. It's worth taking a few simple precautions if you use a lamp regularly. โธป How long is one curing session in a UV nail lamp? Most home gel sessions cure for 30 to 60 seconds per coat, depending on your lamp and the product. For a full set with two coats, total UV exposure usually adds up to:โข 1โ2 minutes per nailโข Around 10โ20 minutes total per manicure Compared to a tanning bed (often 8โ20 minutes of full-body exposure), the dose is small โ but it does add up over many manicures. โธป Can I get sunburn from a UV nail lamp? Sunburn is very rare from a single gel manicure session. The risk most experts focus on is cumulative UV exposure to your hands over time โ which can contribute to photoageing or skin damage in the long term. That's why simple precautions like SPF on your hands and UV-protective gloves are easy wins. โธป Is there a way to do gel nails without a UV lamp? Yes. Our UV-Free Gel Nail Wraps are real gel โ fully cured during manufacture โ so when you apply them at home there's no lamp, no curing step, and no UV exposure at all. They're a great option if you:โข Want to skip UV entirelyโข Travel a lot and don't want to pack a lampโข Have sensitive skin or a medical reason to avoid UVโข Just want a faster, simpler at-home mani โธป What's the safest way to use a UV lamp at home? A few small habits make a meaningful difference:โข Apply SPF 30+ to the back of your hands about 20 minutes before you cureโข Use UV-protective fingerless gloves (cheap, effective, your nails still cure)โข Cure for the recommended time only โ don't add extra "just to be sure"โข Take a few days off between fresh sets Same energy as putting sunscreen on your face every day. A small, easy step for long-term peace of mind. โธป Should pregnant women use UV nail lamps? There's no clear evidence that occasional gel manicures are unsafe during pregnancy, but recommendations vary by health professional. If you'd like to skip UV exposure altogether during pregnancy, our UV-Free Gel Nail Wraps give you the same gel finish without a lamp. If you have specific concerns, have a quick chat with your GP or midwife. โธป Are LED nail lamps safer than UV nail lamps? Modern nail-curing lamps are technically LED-UV lamps โ they emit UV light through LED bulbs. So while "LED" sounds different, it's still a UV-based curing system. The key difference is efficiency: LED lamps cure faster, which means less total UV exposure per manicure. โธป Do UV-free gel nail wraps last as long as semi-cured ones? Semi-cured wraps tend to last a little longer (up to 2+ weeks with good prep) because they harden under the lamp into a stronger finish. UV-free wraps are designed for fast, flexible application โ they typically last around 7 to 10 days, depending on your lifestyle and how well you press them in. Both are real gel. They just suit different routines. If you've ever applied gel nail wraps and wondered why they didn't last as long as expected, your cuticles might be the missing piece. Cuticle care is one of those small steps that makes a big difference. When done properly, it helps your manicure sit neatly on the nail and improves how long your semi-cured gel nail wraps or UV-free gel nail wraps last. The good news? It's simple โ and once you get into the habit, it becomes part of your routine. Are You Supposed to Push Your Cuticles Back? Yes โ gently. Your cuticle is the thin layer of skin that sits on the nail plate. Its job is to protect new nail growth, but when it grows too far onto the nail, it can:โข Prevent proper adhesionโข Cause lifting with gel nail wrapsโข Make your manicure look less clean Pushing your cuticles back (not cutting them) helps create a smooth surface so your at-home gel nail wraps can sit properly and last longer. The key is to be gentle and consistent, not aggressive. Photo: Cuticle Balm How to Push Back Overgrown Cuticles? If your cuticles are a little overgrown, don't worry โ this is very common. Here's a simple step-by-step approach: 1. Soften the cuticles firstApply a cuticle oil or balm and let it sit for a minute. This makes the process much easier and protects the skin. 2. Use a gentle pushing motionUsing a cuticle tool, gently push the cuticle back toward the base of the nail. 3. Don't force itIf you feel resistance, stop and apply more oil. Cuticles should never be scraped or forced. 4. Wipe the nail clean before applying productsThis ensures your DIY gel nail wraps adhere properly. Doing this regularly helps maintain a clean nail surface and improves the wear time of long lasting gel nail wraps. Photo: Cuticle Oil Pen What Vitamin Am I Lacking If My Cuticles Are Peeling? Peeling cuticles are usually a sign that your nails and skin need more hydration, but they can also be linked to nutrient deficiencies. Common factors include:โข Low vitamin B (especially biotin)โข Low vitamin Eโข Dehydrationโข Frequent exposure to water or chemicals That said, in everyday life, the most common cause is simply dryness. This is where a daily habit like using a cuticle oil pen or balm can make a big difference. Applying it at night (while watching TV or winding down) helps support healthier nails and improves the results of your gel nail wraps for beginners. What Tool Do I Use to Push My Cuticles Back? You don't need anything complicated. The most common tools are: Wooden cuticle sticksโข Gentle and beginner-friendlyโข Great for everyday use Metal cuticle pushersโข More preciseโข Best used with a light hand Glass cuticle toolsโข Smooth and easy to controlโข A nice option if you want something reusable If you're using semi-cured gel nail wraps or gel nail wraps without UV light, a simple wooden stick is often more than enough to prep your nails properly. Customer Photo: Glass Tool Bundle - Cuticle Pusher and Nail File What Are Common Cuticle Care Mistakes? This is where a lot of people unintentionally cause lifting or damage. Here are the most common mistakes to avoid: 1. Cutting instead of pushingCutting cuticles too aggressively can lead to irritation and damage. 2. Skipping cuticle prep entirelyEven the best salon quality gel nail wraps won't last if they're applied over cuticle. 3. Applying product over the cuticle areaIf gel nail wraps touch the skin, they won't seal properly and can lift early. 4. Not using oil regularlyDry cuticles can lead to peeling, cracking, and poor adhesion. 5. Over-filing the nail plateThis can weaken your nails and make any product harder to wear. Customer Photo: Purple Cats Eye Semi-cured Gel Nails Why Cuticle Care Matters for Gel Nail Wraps Whether you're using:โข semi-cured gel nail wraps with UV lampโข UV-free gel nail wrapsโข or other at-home gel nail wraps Cuticle prep is one of the biggest factors in achieving:โข Better adhesionโข Longer wear timeโข A cleaner, more polished look It's a small step, but it's what helps your manicure go from "good" to salon-quality at home. The Bottom Line Cuticle care doesn't need to be complicated. A simple routine โ gently pushing back your cuticles and using oil regularly โ can completely change how your gel nail wraps look and last. If you're already taking the time to apply your nails at home, this is one of the easiest ways to get better results. And once you get into the habit, it becomes one of those small rituals that makes everything feel a little more put together. Browse our nail tools & accessories Cuticle Care FAQs How often should you push back your cuticles? You only need to gently push back your cuticles once a week, or before applying your gel nail wraps. Doing it too often can irritate the skin, so it's best to keep it light and consistent rather than frequent and aggressive. โธป Should you cut your cuticles or push them back? It's best to push your cuticles back, not cut them. Cutting can lead to irritation, infection, and damage to the nail area. Gently pushing them back helps create a clean surface for semi-cured gel nail wraps or UV-free gel nail wraps without harming your nails. โธป Why do my gel nail wraps lift around the cuticle? Lifting near the cuticle is usually caused by:โข Product touching the skinโข Cuticles not being pushed back properlyโข Oils left on the nail plate For the best results, make sure your nail is clean, dry, and free of cuticle before applying your DIY gel nail wraps. โธป Can I push back my cuticles without tools? Yes โ especially if your cuticles are soft. After applying cuticle oil or after a shower, you can gently push them back using:โข A towelโข Your thumbโข A soft cotton pad However, for best results with gel nail wraps for beginners, a simple wooden cuticle stick gives more control. โธป What's the best way to soften cuticles before pushing them back? The easiest ways to soften cuticles are:โข Applying cuticle oil or balmโข Soaking hands in warm water for a few minutesโข Applying oil after a shower Soft cuticles are much easier to work with and reduce the risk of damage. Do I need to push back cuticles for UV-free gel nail wraps? Yes โ even though UV-free gel nail wraps don't require a lamp, proper prep still matters. Pushing back your cuticles helps:โข Improve adhesionโข Prevent liftingโข Create a cleaner finish This applies to all at-home gel nail wraps, whether they use a UV lamp or not. โธป Why are my cuticles always dry and peeling? Dry cuticles are usually caused by:โข Lack of hydrationโข Frequent hand washingโข Exposure to chemicalsโข Weather (especially colder months) Using a cuticle oil or balm daily can make a noticeable difference in both nail health and how well your long lasting gel nail wraps perform. โธป Can cuticle care help my nails grow stronger? Yes โ healthy cuticles support healthy nail growth. Regular use of cuticle oil helps:โข Hydrate the nail areaโข Reduce breakageโข Support stronger, smoother nails over time This is especially helpful if you're using semi-cured gel nail wraps as part of a nail growth routine. โธป What happens if I don't push back my cuticles? If you skip this step:โข Your gel nail wraps may not stick properlyโข Lifting is more likelyโข The manicure may look uneven Even a quick, gentle push-back can make a big difference in how your nails look and last.
