Semi-cured gel nails applied at home compared with a salon manicure

We get asked this one a lot. People love the idea of doing their nails at home, but they also want to know if it actually saves them money, or if they're just spending it differently. Which is a completely fair question to ask before you commit to anything. So we sat down and did the real maths on our Semi-Cured range specifically, real gel, cured under a lamp, built for strength and longevity. No spin, no cherry-picked numbers. Just honest Australian figures, including the costs most people don't think to count. Here's what we found. ย  What a salon visit actually costs in Australia A standard gel or shellac manicure runs aroundย $50โ€“$75ย at most metro salons in 2026 (Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth). SNS or dip sits a bit higher ($70โ€“$100), acrylics around $60โ€“$95, builder gel up to $120. For the sake of this comparison, we'll useย $65ย as a realistic middle for a regular shellac or gel. But that's rarely the full story. There's also travel to and from the salon (petrol, parking, or public transport), which usually addsย $5โ€“$15. A tip, if you do that, is anotherย $6โ€“$10. And if a nail lifts or chips mid-cycle and you head back in for a repair, that'sย $15โ€“$30 on top. Removal between sets, if it's not included, adds another $15โ€“$25. All in, a realistic per-visit cost sits closer toย $80โ€“$95ย once you account for the extras. There's also the time. A salon appointment (booking, travelling, waiting, the service itself, travelling home) is usually 1.5 to 2 hours door to door. That's worth counting. What that adds up to over a year Semi-Cured wraps wear 2+ weeks, so if you're doing your nails every two weeks, that's 26 sets a year, and it's a fair like-for-like comparison with a fortnightly salon habit. - 26 x $65 (service only) =ย $1,690 - 26 x $80 (realistic all-in) =ย $2,080 Somewhere betweenย $1,690 and $2,080 a year. Just to keep your nails looking good. ย  What doing it at home actually costs Once you've got a kit, the cost of each fresh set is just the wraps themselves. The one-off kit covers your lamp, tools, and prep essentials. You buy it once and that's it. Aย Semi-Cured Basic Starter Kitย (2 sets + UV lamp) is $45. Then it's just the sets: -ย $22 per setย (single) -ย $16.50 per set when you buy any 4(25% off, most people end up here anyway because you get more variety and it just makes sense) At $16.50 per set across 26 fresh manis a year, the numbers look like this: - Year one: $45 kit + $429 in wraps =ย $474 - Year two onwards:ย $429. Just the wraps, nothing else. How the two compare LAโ€‘BEK 3-Year Cost Comparison Salon visits vs. LAโ€‘BEK semi-cured gel wraps You could save ~$3,738โ€“$4,908 over 3 years, switching from the salon to LAโ€‘BEK Year Salon LAโ€‘BEK You save Year 1 $1,690โ€“$2,080 $474 ~$1,216โ€“$1,606 Year 2 $1,690โ€“$2,080 $429 ~$1,261โ€“$1,651 Year 3 $1,690โ€“$2,080 $429 ~$1,261โ€“$1,651 3-year total $5,070โ€“$6,240 $1,332 ~$3,738โ€“$4,908 Over three years, the typical saving is somewhere betweenย $3,700 and $4,900. That's a small overseas trip. Or a year of grocery deliveries. Or genuinely just staying in your account. ย  ย "But I don't do my nails every two weeks" Fair enough, not everyone does. Here's how the maths works for less frequent wear. Once a month (12 manis a year):ย The salon costs around $960 with realistic extras. At-home comes to $243 in year one (including the kit), then $198 a year after that. You're saving roughly $717โ€“$762 a year. Special occasions only (6 manis a year): Salon sits around $480. At-home works out to $177 in year one (using single sets, since you don't need to buy 4), then $132 a year. Saving roughly $303โ€“$348. Even occasional mani people come out ahead. It just takes a little longer to really feel it. ย  What else you save (that isn't money) The financial case is obvious enough. But a couple of other things are worth naming. Time.ย A fresh Semi-Cured set at home takes around 25โ€“35 minutes, prep, application, and curing under the lamp included. Compare that to 1.5โ€“2 hours door-to-door for a salon appointment. Across a year of fortnightly manis, you're getting back around 30+ hours. A full week of evenings. Flexibility.ย At home, you can do your nails at 9pm because you felt like it, or change colours the next morning if you weren't feeling that shade after all. No booking ahead, no waiting, no committing to what you picked three weeks ago when your appointment was made. Nail health.ย This one comes up a lot in our community. A lot of people find their nails actually improve after switching: less filing, gentler removal, no extended acetone soaks. It's not guaranteed for everyone, but it's something we hear consistently. ย  When the salon is still worth it We're not here to talk you out of the salon entirely. That's not the point. The salon genuinely earns its place for things like acrylic or builder gel extensions that wraps can't replicate, complex nail art that's beyond what you want to attempt at home, or those times you just want to sit in a chair and have someone else do it. That's a treat, and treats are real. Plenty of our customers do both. At-home most of the time, salon for the special occasions. Even then, the maths still works heavily in your favour. Quick recap - A standard salon mani in Australia costs aroundย $80 all-inย once you factor in extras - An at-home Semi-Cured mani costs aroundย $16.50 per set - Year-one savings land at $1,200+ even after buying a starter kit - Ongoing savings areย $1,260โ€“$1,650 a year - Over three years, the typical saving isย $3,700โ€“$4,900 - Plus around 30 hours of time back a year Around 25โ€“35 minutes from start to finish. Lasts 2+ weeks a set. The savings take care of themselves from there. If you want to give it a try, aย Semi-Cured Starter Kit is the easiest way in, with everything you need in one box, from $45. Or if you'd rather just test a couple of colours first, our Semi-Cured rangeย at $22 a set (or $16.50 each when you grab any 4) is a low-commitment place to start. ย  Cost & Valueย FAQs How much does a salon manicure cost in Australia? A standard gel or shellac manicure typically runsย $50โ€“$75 for the service itself in 2026. Once you add travel, tips, removal fees, and the occasional mid-cycle repair, most people are spending closer to $80โ€“$95 per appointment all in. โธป How much does an at-home LA-BEK Semi-Cured mani cost? Per fresh set, it'sย $22ย for a single, or $16.50 each when you buy any 4 Semi-Cured shades together (25% off). Year one also includes a one-offย Basic Starter Kit ($45, 2 sets + UV lamp). After that, it's just the sets. โธป How long does each Semi-Cured set last? Semi-Cured wraps last 2+ weeks.ย If you treat them well (daily cuticle oil, gloves for hot water, gentle removal) most people consistently land at the upper end of that range. โธป Is the starter kit worth the upfront cost? If you do your nails more than 3โ€“4 times a year, yes. Theย Semi-Cured Starter Kit pays for itself in roughly one salon visit avoided. After that, you're just saving. โธป Do I have to buy 4 sets to get the discount? No, but it's worth it if you're building a rotation. Buying any 4 sets brings the price to $16.50 each, and 6 or more brings it to $15.40 each. They can be across different shades, mixed however you like. Four sets lands at $66 total, enough for around two months of fresh manis. โธป What if I still want to go to the salon sometimes? Totally reasonable. Plenty of our customers do both: LA-BEK for everyday wear, salon for special occasions. Even with a few salon visits a year mixed in, you'll still save significantly. You don't have to choose one or the other to make the maths work. โธป Are at-home Semi-Cured wraps as good as the salon? For everyday wear, genuinely yes. The gel is real gel. The wear time is comparable. The finish looks salon-quality. Where the salon still has the edge: extreme nail extensions, highly detailed custom art, and the experience of being waited on, which is its own thing worth having sometimes. For most normal-life manicures, at-home Semi-Cured wraps deliver the same result for a fraction of the cost and time. โธป What's the best way to try LA-BEK Semi-Cured without committing? A singleย Semi-Cured setย for $22 is the lowest-commitment entry point. If you want better value straight away, 4 sets for $66 ($16.50 each) gives you around eight weeks of fresh manis to work through. And if you're ready to go all in, the Starter Kitย has everything in one place from $45. โธป Written by Laura & Bek Founders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creatingย semi-cured gel nail wrapsย designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home. *All salon prices are typical Australian ranges for 2026, drawn from public salon menus across major cities. The Quiet Luxe periwinkle and rose gold nail art look

A soft, dove-grey periwinkle base with one fine rose gold line, and a single angled tip to finish it off Periwinkle is having a proper moment this year, that chalky, cool-toned blue-lilac that photographs beautifully and goes with almost everything. We wanted a nail art look that let the colour do the talking, so we kept the detail to one thing: a fine rose gold line. Most nails get a single thin stripe sitting close to the cuticle. One accent nail gets an angled tip instead, like a modern take on a French mani. That's it. No freehand, no patterns, no fuss. It's quiet, it's a little bit luxe, and it takes about ten minutes on top of your usual application. This is the third post in ourย Nail Art Tutorialsย series, the looks we actually wear, broken down step-by-step so you can recreate them at home. Catch up on Violet Moonlight and Night Black and Gold Strip Nail Artย if you missed them. Let's get into it. ย  The look at a glance Base:ย Periwinkle Semi-Cured Gel Nails, a soft, dove-grey blue-lilac with a cool, wearable edgeAccent:ย Rose Gold Stripes + Tips Nail Art Decals, fine rose gold line decals plus angled tip decals on the same sheetFinish: Gloss Top Coat, seals everything in and adds that glassy, wet-look shineTime:ย Around 10 minutes on top of your standard applicationSkill level:ย Beginner-friendly, no freehand, no brushes, just tweezers and a steady hand You don't need the stripe sitting in exactly the same spot on every nail, and you don't need the angled tip on the same finger every time. A little variation from nail to nail is part of what makes this look feel considered rather than stencilled on. That's the charm of it. ย  What you'll need Periwinkle Semi-Cured Gel NailsRose Gold Stripes + Tips Nail Art DecalsPrecision Tweezers: for clean, controlled decal placementGloss Top Coat: to seal and protect the finishUV LED lamp: to cure your gel wraps and top coatCuticle oil and a wooden cuticle stick/tweezersย for prep ย  Step-by-step: how to create the Quiet Luxe look Step 1: Prep your nails Start with clean, oil-free nails: - Push back your cuticles (ourย full guideย if you need a refresher)- Wipe each nail with a prep pad or rubbing alcohol- File and shape if needed Good prep is what turns a 5-day mani into a 2-week one. Don't rush this bit. ย  Step 2: Apply your Periwinkle wraps and cure Apply your Periwinkle Semi-Cured Gel Nails as normal: - Match each wrap to the size of your nail- Press firmly from cuticle to tip- Smooth out any air bubbles- File away the excess at the tips- Cure fully under your UV LED lamp If you're new to semi-cured application, ourย Semi-Cured Gel Nails How Toย tutorial walks through the whole process. ย  Step 3: Place your rose gold stripe near the cuticle Using yourย Precision Tweezers, gently lift a stripe decal from the sheet. Position it horizontally, sitting close to the cuticle line rather than across the middle of the nail. This is the detail that makes the look: a stripe near the base reads as a fine, jewellery-like line rather than a French tip. Press it flat with an orange stick or the flat edge of your tweezers, working from the centre outward to smooth out any air. Trim the excess at both edges with small nail scissors. Repeat on every nail except your chosen accent nail. ย  Step 4: Add the angled tip to your accent nail Pick one nail as your accent. We used the thumb, but the ring finger works just as well. Lift a tip decal from the same sheet and lay it across the upper corner of the nail at a slight angle, following the natural curve of the tip. Press flat, then trim to match the edge of your nail. It's a small detail, but it's what gives this look its slightly asymmetric, modern edge. ย  Step 5: Repeat and vary Work your way across both hands: rose gold stripe near the cuticle on most nails, angled tip on your accent nail. You don't need to mirror the placement exactly from hand to hand. A little natural variation is part of the look. ย  Step 6: Seal with Gloss Top Coat Apply a thin layer of [Gloss Top Coat](https://la-bek.com.au/product/gloss-top-coat/) over every nail, making sure you go all the way over the decals. Press the brush flat against the nail and sweep from cuticle to tip in one smooth pass. ย  Step 7: Final cure and enjoy Cure under your UV LED lamp as directed on the top coat. A little cuticle oil around the edges to finish, and your Quiet Luxe set is done. ย  ย  ย  Why this look works 1.ย Periwinkle is doing a lot of the work.ย It's one of the most talked-about shades this year: soft, cool-toned, and genuinely wearable, which means the nail art on top doesn't need to compete with it. 2.ย Fine metallic detail feels expensive right now.ย The trend has moved away from heavy glitter toward delicate, fine metallic accents, exactly what a single thin rose gold line gives you. 3.ย One decal sheet, two finishes.ย Stripes for a clean line, tips for an angled accent nail. You get two looks' worth of nail art from one set of decals. ย  Quick recap - Apply Periwinkle wraps as normal and cure fully- Pick a rose gold stripe from the sheet with precision tweezers- Position the stripe close to the cuticle line on each nail- Choose one accent nail and add an angled tip decal near the free edge- Press flat, trim the excess and repeat across both hands- Seal with Gloss Top Coat over every nail, including the decals- Final cure and enjoy Around 10 minutes on top of your standard application. Aroundย 10 minutes on top of your standard application: a few extra minutes for the stripes, a couple more for the angled tip on your accent nail. If it's your first time working with decals, give yourself closer to 15โ€“20 minutes so you're not rushing the placement. โธป Can I use the Rose Gold Stripes + Tips decals on UV-Free wraps instead of Semi-Cured? Yes, the decals work on ourย UV-Free wrapsย too. Keep in mind UV-Free wears for 7โ€“10 days rather than 2+ weeks, so the overall wear time will be shorter, but the application process is much the same. โธป Do I need the stripe in exactly the same spot on every nail? Not at all. Small variations from nail to nail (a touch higher, a touch lower) actually make the look feel more natural and less stencilled. Consistency isn't the goal here. โธป Which nail should I choose as my accent nail? Whichever one you like. We went with the thumb, but the ring finger is a classic choice if you want the accent to be the first thing people notice. There's no wrong answer. โธป Will the rose gold decals stay put through normal wear? Yes, sealing them under a thin layer of Gloss Top Coatย and curing under your UV lamp locks them in for the full life of the set, typically 2+ weeks with proper prep. The top coat step is the one to never skip. โธป Can I skip the accent tip and just do stripes on all ten nails? Absolutely. It's a lovely, simpler variation: one fine rose gold line on every nail, no angled tip at all. Equally, you could do tips on every nail and skip the stripes. The sheet gives you the flexibility either way. โธป Will this look damage my nails? No, LA-BEK Semi-Cured Gel Nails and our nail art decals are gentle on your natural nails when applied and removed properly. For the gentlest removal, head to ourย step-by-step removal guide: cuticle oil, patience, and no peeling. โธป Can I do this look on short nails? Yes, the stripe-near-cuticle placement actually suits shorter nails well, since it doesn't rely on length to work. For the angled tip, keep it a touch smaller so it doesn't overwhelm the nail. Laura'sย tips for short nailsย has more on adapting nail art for shorter lengths. โธป Written by Laura & BekFounders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creatingย semi-cured gel nail wraps andย UV-free gel nail wrapsย designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home.

Pinterest Winter Nails 2026: The Looks Everyone's Saving

If your Pinterest feed looks anything like ours, it's currently full of rich winter manicures and you've probably already saved at least three of them. Winter 2026 nails are feeling different. Less harsh, less overdone. More textured, luminous, and quietly luxurious. The looks getting saved right now aren't shouting, they're the kind you notice on someone across the room and think what colour is that? Here are the six trends we're seeing everywhere on Pinterest this season, and the LA-BEK shades that get you there at home. ย  ย  ย  1. Cherry Mocha Nails Move over classic burgundy. This winter, Pinterest is obsessed with rich cherry tones that lean warm, think deep berry with a hint of chocolate depth rather than the cool, dark red of winters past. Cherry Mocha nails feel expensive and cosy at the same time. The kind of shade that works with a chunky knit and a silk blouse. The secret is the warmth underneath the berry, it's what makes them feel different from a standard red. Cherry Red and Classic Burgundy (Velvet Nights) are your reliable starting points. For something with more depth and warmth, Sangria from the Midnight Frost Edit sits right in that cherry-cola territory. Going UV-Free? Burnt Umber from the Winter Layers Edit brings in that deep mahogany warmth with a lamp-free peel-and-press application. Shop Cherry Mocha Nails ย  ย  2. Cat Eye and Velvet Nails Velvet nails are holding strong on Pinterest, but this season the look has evolved. Instead of dramatic magnetic pulls, what's getting saved is softer and more luminous, a dimensional shimmer that shifts as it catches the light, like the surface of velvet fabric. Still striking, but wearable enough for a Tuesday. The shades to reach for: Deep Sea Cats Eye for that oceanic, magnetic depth. Purple Cats Eye for something that feels a little more classic and jewel-toned. If you want the velvety texture without the magnetic effect, Volcanic Speckle gives you a moody, dimensional base that photographs beautifully. A Matte Velvet Top Coat takes any of these to the next level โ€” switching from glossy to velvety in one coat. Shop Cats Eye Nail Range ย  ย  ย  3. Soft Cashmere Pinks Winter doesn't have to mean dark nails. One of Pinterest's quiet breakout trends this season is soft, feminine pink done properly not candy-bright, not baby shower. Think the pink of a cashmere scarf. Understated, romantic, and the kind of colour that makes your skin look great. These shades work especially well with glossy or glassy finishes, which add depth without adding drama. From our range, Transparent Pink is our most-loved pink for good reason. It's wearable on every skin tone and pairs beautifully with a gloss coat for that cashmere finish. Baby Pink goes even softer, a barely-there shade that still reads as polished rather than plain. For something with a little more dimension, Pink Pearl has that cool, luminous quality that shifts in the light, while Rose Garden brings a warmer, more romantic version of the same idea. And if you want a pink with a slightly dustier edge, the kind that reads more grown-up than sweet, Soft Pink is the one. Shop Pink Gel Nail Range ย  ย  ย  4. Espresso Glaze Nails Coffee nails are having their biggest moment yet, and the finish is everything. Warm brown, mocha and latte tones look rich and timeless on their own, but pair them with a high-gloss top coat and they become something else entirely. That glazed, reflective finish is what's all over Pinterest right now. From our range, Mocha is the warm chocolate classic, Oat Latte brings that creamy latte softness, and Classic Chocolate keeps it traditional and deeply wearable. If you prefer a lamp-free routine, Gigi Chocolate covers the same warm brown territory with a peel-and-press application, Burnt Umber takes it a touch deeper into mahogany, and Coffee Cream pulls back for a lighter, creamier take on the trend. Any of them, finished with a gloss top coat, gives you that lacquered glazed effect that's everywhere this season. Shop Coffee Inspired Nails ย  ย  ย  ย  5. Glossy Berry Nails Deep berry has always been a winter classic. What's changed this year is the finish. Pinterest is firmly in the glossy era, high-shine, reflective nails that look almost wet. Applied over a deep berry or plum, that finish makes the colour feel richer and more modern than the flat, matte versions of seasons past. This is a strong section for our range. Mulberry is the signature berry, reliable, rich, always right. Dusty Plum goes softer and more sophisticated. Classic Burgundy is the timeless choice. Berry Mixed adds soft layered undertones for something a little less expected. And Sangria brings shimmer into the berry mix, which under a gloss coat looks genuinely gorgeous. Pair any of these with a high-shine top coat for maximum impact. Shop Berry Inspired Nails 6. Glazed Sparkle Nails Glitter isn't going anywhere, but it's getting a lot more refined. Winter 2026 sparkle is softer, finer and more light-reflective. Think pearl and opal rather than disco ball. The kind of shimmer that works in daylight and at dinner. From our range: Opal Glitter is the essential, that soft, shifting opal shimmer that works on any nail length. Opal Freeze is cooler and more iridescent. Crimson Sparkle adds warmth and a hint of red to the sparkle. Sprinkle Glow Snow keeps it light and wintry. Cosmic Chic brings in that multi-dimensional shimmer if you want something a little more statement. Shop our Sparkle Nail Range ย  ย  The biggest shift this winter? It's all about finish. If there's one thread running through every trend above, it's this: Winter 2026 is less about choosing a bold colour and more about choosing the right finish. Velvet depth on a cat eye. Gloss over a deep berry. Iridescence in a soft pink. That's what's making this season's nail looks feel different, and it's also what makes them surprisingly easy to recreate at home. Can You Shower, Swim and Wash Up With Gel Nail Wraps? Your Real-Life Questions, Answered

Your Real-Life Questions, Answered Most of our DMs start with a version of the same question. "Can Iโ€ฆ" Can I shower with these. Can I swim with these. Can I wash my hair, get in a hot tub, hold the steering wheel, exist as a real person? The short answer is yes. Gel nail wraps are designed for real life, that's the whole point. But there are a few small things worth knowing if you want them to last the full 2+ weeks rather than start lifting on day five. Here's exactly what your wraps can handle, what they can't, and what to tweak in your everyday routine. Can I shower with gel nail wraps? Yes. A normal shower won't affect your wraps at all. What can shorten their wear is long, very hot showers, the kind where you come out a bit pink. Prolonged heat softens the gel edges over time and creates space for lifting. A few small habits help:- Keep particularly long showers a little cooler if you can- Don't fully soak your nails in standing hot water- Pat your hands dry rather than rubbing Daily showers? Totally fine. Long winter soaks? Worth being mindful. Can I wash my hair with gel wraps on? Yes, absolutely. Shampoo, conditioner, masks, none of it affects your wraps. Your hair routine is a non-issue. Photo: Soft Pink Semi-cured Gel Nails Can I swim in a pool with gel nail wraps? A few things to know:- Chlorine is fine for the wraps themselves (they're sealed, not painted)- Prolonged time in water can soften edges, so back-to-back pool days might shorten your wear by a day or two- Sunscreen is your friend, apply before you swim, not after (oily sunscreens applied straight to clean wet hands can occasionally affect lift) If you're a regular swimmer, your wraps will still last a respectable amount of time, just maybe closer to 10 days than 2+ weeks. Can I swim in the ocean? Yes. Saltwater is genuinely fine for gel wraps, arguably better than pool water because it doesn't have chlorine. The main thing to watch for is sand. If you've been digging at the beach or sitting in wet sand, give your nails a gentle rinse afterwards so nothing's stuck under your tips. Photo: Barbie Pink Semi-cured Gel Nails What about hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms? Here's where we'd be slightly more cautious. - Hot tubs, short stints (10โ€“15 minutes) are fine. Long soaks combine heat and prolonged water, which is the worst combo for wrap longevity.- Saunas, usually fine because they're dry heat for short periods.- Steam rooms, short visits are okay; longer sessions can soften edges. If you're doing a spa day, just keep an eye on your edges afterwards and press any small lifts back down with the rubber end of our Precision Tweezers (the hairdryer reseal trick also works beautifully). On saying that on hot tubs, Laura our co-founder has spent many time at the Peninsula Hot Springs for the day and had no lifting or issues with our semi-cured gel nail wraps. Photo: Inkwell Semi-cured Gel Nails and Aztec Gold Nail Decals Can I wash dishes with gel wraps on? Yes โ€” but wear gloves if you want them to last. Hot soapy water for 10+ minutes a day is one of the single biggest causes of early lifting. It softens the edges, lets water seep underneath, and slowly works wraps loose. Washing-up gloves are a $5 investment that genuinely doubles the life of a set. Can I cook and chop with gel wraps on? Yes, your wraps can handle normal cooking, chopping, kneading, and everything else in the kitchen. A few small notes:- Knife edges against the nail are fine (wraps are flexible)- Lemon and acidic foods are fine- Hot oil splashes are fine (you're not curing them, just glancing heat) Use gloves for big roasting cleanups or scrubbing baked-on pans. Photo: Lavender Haze Semi-cured Gel Nails Can I exercise and sweat with gel wraps on? 100%. Cardio, yoga, weights, running, Pilates, your wraps couldn't care less. Sweat doesn't affect the gel. Lifting weights doesn't loosen them (the gel is bonded, not glued on top). The one thing to watch for: grip chalk and tape at the gym can occasionally catch a slightly lifting edge. If you climb, lift heavy, or do anything with chalk, give your edges a quick press with the rubber end of your tweezers after each session. Can I sleep with newly applied wraps? Yes, once you've cured a Semi-Cured set under the lamp (or pressed in a UV-Free set firmly), you can go to sleep immediately. The gel is fully set. No drying, no smudging, no waiting. This is the bit that genuinely converts people from polish. Photo: Precision Tweezers Can I get my hands wet straight after applying wraps? A small wait helps: - Semi-Cured wraps: Once cured under the lamp, they're fully set. You can technically get them wet immediately, but we'd recommend waiting an hour or so just to let the seal fully settle.- UV-Free wraps: Wait at least 30 minutes after pressing them in before getting them wet, this gives the bond time to set properly. If you're applying in the evening, let them sit overnight before swimming or doing dishes. You won't regret the extra patience. Photo: Pixie Dust UV-Free Gel Nails Can I apply hand cream and cuticle oil with wraps on? Yes โ€” please do. Hand cream and cuticle oil applied over the top of your wraps:- Keep your cuticles healthy (which reduces lifting)- Protect the surrounding skin- Make your wraps last longer, not shorter The only time to avoid them is before applying a fresh set, your nails need to be clean and oil-free for application. Once wraps are on, oil away. What about gardening and rough work? Wraps are surprisingly tough, but if you're doing heavy garden work, demolition, or anything where your nails will take a beating, gloves are your friend. The wraps themselves won't shatter or peel from a single rough day. But weeks of unprotected hard work will shorten any manicure. So what's the real list of things to be careful with? Yes, please do. If you take one thing from this post, it's this, these three things are what actually shortens wrap wear: 1. Long, hot water exposure (showers, baths, hot dishwashing)2. Picking, peeling, or biting at the edges3. Skipping cuticle oil in your daily routine Almost everything else is a non-issue. Quick recap - Showering โœ“- Swimming (pool + ocean) โœ“- Sweating + exercise โœ“- Cooking + chopping โœ“- Hair washing โœ“- Sleeping โœ“- Dishes โœ“ (with gloves)- Hot tubs โš ๏ธ (short stints only)- Long hot baths โš ๏ธ (the actual enemy) Real life with gel wraps is genuinely the same as real life without them โ€” just with nicer nails. Salon-quality longevity, minus the salon. The fixes are small. The difference is huge. Want everything you need to make your wraps last? Browse our Nail Care range for cuticle oil and prep essentials, or grab a Starter Kit if you want everything bundled. And if you're ready for a fresh set, the full UV-Free and Semi-Cured ranges are right here. Real-Life Wear FAQs How long do gel nail wraps actually last with normal life? Most people get:- UV-Free wraps: 7โ€“10 days- Semi-Cured wraps: up to 2+ weeks If you live a hot-water-heavy life (frequent dishes, long baths, hot tubs), you might land at the lower end of those ranges. If you wear gloves for hot water and apply cuticle oil daily, you'll hit the longer end consistently. โธป Will swimming on holiday wreck my mani? Not at all. A normal week of holiday swimming, pool, ocean, both, won't ruin your wraps. What helps:- Apply cuticle oil at the end of each day- Rinse off chlorine or saltwater before showers- Wear a hat instead of constantly running your fingers through wet hair Your nails will look just as good getting off the plane as they did getting on. โธป Why do my wraps lift faster than my friend's? This is super common and almost always comes down to two things: 1. Nail biology: some people have oilier or more porous nails (our Not All Nails Are the Same post covers this in detail)2. Daily habits: more hot water, more dishes, more time at the gym Both are completely normal. Small adjustments make a real difference. โธป Can I shower straight after applying my wraps? We'd recommend waiting at least an hour after a Semi-Cured set is cured, or 30 minutes after pressing in a UV-Free set. Best practice: apply your wraps in the evening, sleep on them, shower normally in the morning. You're set for the next 2 weeks. โธป Do gel wraps protect my nails from damage? In many cases, yes, wraps form a protective layer over your natural nail. People often find their nails:- Stop snagging on hair, clothes, and gym equipment- Break less often- Grow longer (because they're not breaking at the tips) That's why we hear so often from people who say their nails got stronger during a wraps phase, not weaker. โธป Will sunscreen affect my wraps? Sunscreen over applied wraps is fine. The only thing to be careful of is applying oily sunscreens to slightly damp or recently washed hands and then immediately reapplying or refreshing a wrap edge. Let the sunscreen sink in first. โธป Can I do hot yoga or sauna sessions with wraps? Short sessions (30โ€“45 minutes) are usually fine. Repeated, long-duration heat sessions multiple times a week may shorten your wraps' wear time. If you're a hot yoga regular, expect closer to the lower end of the wear range rather than 2+ weeks. A daily cuticle oil habit helps a lot. โธป What's the single best thing I can do for longer wear? If you remember one thing โ€” cuticle oil. Daily. It supports your cuticles, keeps your wrap edges sealed, and reduces lifting from almost every direction. Pop a Cuticle Oil Pen by your bedside. One stroke per nail before bed. That's it. Night Black gel nails finished with gold strip nail art

One gold line. That's it. And somehow it changes everything. This is the nail art we keep coming back to when we want something that looks expensive without taking more than a few extra minutes. Night Black as the base, one thin gold strip placed horizontally across each nail, pressed flat, trimmed, and sealed under top coat. It's minimal, it's editorial, and it's genuinely beginner-friendly, no steady hands, no brushes, no artistic talent required. If you can use tweezers, you can do this look. Photo: Night Black Semi-cured Gel Nails and Gold Stripes Nail Decal ย  ย  The look at a glance Base: Night Black Semi-Cured Gel Nails a deep, high-gloss black that makes every accent popAccent: Gold Stripes Nail Art Decals ultra-thin gold lines pressed directly onto the cured gelFinish: Gloss Top Coat seals the strip in and adds that polished, wet-look shineTime: Around 5โ€“10 minutes on top of your standard application - Skill level: Beginner-friendly โ€” no brushes, no freehand, no artistic talent required The placement doesn't have to be identical on every nail. A slight variation in where the strip sits, higher on one finger, lower on another, actually makes the whole look feel more natural and intentional. That's part of its charm. ย  ย  What you'll need - Night Black Semi-Cured Gel Nails- Gold Stripes Nail Art Decals- Precision Tweezers the key tool for clean placement- Gloss Top Coat to seal and protect- UV LED lamp to cure your gel strips and top coat ย  ย  Step-by-step: how to do black and gold strip nail art at home Step 1 โ€” Apply your Night Black gel wraps as normal Follow the standard [semi-cured application process](/starter-kit/): prep your nails, peel, press, file, and cure. Make sure your nails are fully cured and smooth before adding any nail art on top. No need to apply top coat yet โ€” you'll add that at the very end to seal everything in. If you're new to applying our semi-cured wraps, our Semi-Cured Gel Nails How To tutorial is a perfect refresher. Step 2 โ€” Pick up your gold strip with precision tweezers The Gold Stripes Nail Art Decals come on a backing sheet with multiple thin gold lines โ€” you'll have plenty to work with. Using your precision tweezers, gently lift one strip from the sheet at one end. The strips are delicate, so take your time. You don't need to press hard โ€” a light grip is all it takes. Tip: Pick up the strip near one end, not the middle. It gives you more control when you're positioning it on the nail. Step 3 โ€” Position the strip across the nail Lay the strip horizontally across the nail, roughly in the middle or wherever feels right to you. One of the beauties of this look is that the placement doesn't have to be perfect or the same on every nail, a little variation actually makes it feel more natural and intentional. Hold one end of the strip down lightly with your tweezers while you let the rest of the strip fall across the nail surface. Tip: If the strip lands slightly crooked, you can gently nudge it with the flat side of your tweezers before pressing it down. Step 4 โ€” Press down and smooth Once the strip is where you want it, use your wooden stick or the flat end of your tweezers to gently press the strip flat against the nail surface. Work from the centre outward to either side to remove any air gaps or bubbles. The strip will adhere easily โ€” no glue or adhesive required. Step 5 โ€” Trim the excess Once the strip is pressed flat, use small nail scissors or nail snips to trim the excess strip at both edges of the nail. Trim as close to the nail edge as possible for a clean finish. Tip: Trim at a slight angle if needed to follow the natural curve of your nail edge. This gives a neater result than a straight cut. Step 6 โ€” Repeat and vary Apply a gold strip to each nail. You can keep the placement consistent (all strips in the same horizontal position) for a more structured look, or vary the height slightly from nail to nail for something more organic. You can also try applying two strips on some nails, or a diagonal angle on one accent nail. There's no wrong way. Step 7 โ€” Apply your gloss top coat and cure Once all your strips are on and trimmed, apply your Gloss Top Coat over the entire nail โ€” including over the gold strip. This seals everything in, protects the strip, and gives the whole mani that polished, high-shine finish. Cure under your UV LED lamp as directed on the top coat. That's it. You're done. The result A chic, wearable nail art look that takes under five minutes once your base is applied. The gold line catches light in the best way and looks incredible against a glossy black base. It works for every nail length and shape โ€” short, medium, long, square, almond, oval. The simplicity of the design means it always looks intentional. ย  ย  Ways to mix it up Once you're comfortable with the basic horizontal placement, there are a few easy variations to try: Double stripe: place two strips on each nail, slightly spaced apart, for a more graphic look. Diagonal: angle the strip across the nail instead of horizontal. Works especially well on longer nail shapes. Mixed placement: use the stripe on some nails and leave others plain. A clean black nail paired with gold-lined ones creates a really nice balance. Accent nail only: if you're not quite ready to do all ten, start with just one or two nails as a feature. A single gold stripe on a ring finger is effortlessly stylish. ย  ย  Quick recap - Apply Night Black semi-cured gel wraps as normal and cure- Pick up a gold strip from the sheet with precision tweezers- Position the strip horizontally across the nail- Press flat with an orange stick and trim the excess at each edge- Apply Gloss Top Coat over the entire nail, including the strip- Final cure and enjoy Around 5โ€“10 minutes of nail art on top of your standard application. Lasts the full two weeks. Looks like you paid for it. Shop NAIL ART Browse our full Nail Art Range for more colours, liners, and sticker designs to mix and match. ย  ย  Black and gold Nail Art FAQs Do I need any nail art experience for this look? Not at all, this is one of the most beginner-friendly nail art styles there is. The only tool you need is a pair of precision tweezers. There's no painting, no freehand work, and no artistic skill required. If the strip placement isn't perfect on your first try, you can gently reposition it before pressing down. It's very forgiving. โธป Will the gold strips stay on under top coat? Yes, applying a top coat over the strips is actually the most important step for longevity. The top coat seals the strip to the nail surface and protects it from catching or lifting at the edges. Without top coat, the strips can snag. With it, they'll last the full wear of your gel wraps. โธป How long will this nail art look last? Night Black semi-cured gel wraps wear for 2+ weeks with proper application and care. With the gold strips sealed under top coat, the nail art should last the full duration of your mani, you shouldn't need to touch it up between sets. โธป Can I use the gold strips on UV-free gel wraps instead? Yes, the Gold Stripes Nail Art Decals work on UV-free wraps too. Keep in mind that UV-free wraps wear for 7โ€“10 days rather than 2+ weeks, so the overall wear time will be shorter. The application process is the same. โธป How do I remove the gold strips at the end? You don't need to remove them separately. When it's time for your next mani, remove your gel wraps as normal using the standard removal process, the gold strips will come away with the wrap. Never peel. Always use cuticle oil and soak to release gently. โธป How many strips are on one decal sheet? The Gold Stripes Nail Art Decals sheet contains multiple thin gold lines โ€” enough to cover all ten nails with strips to spare for variations, fixes, and double-stripe looks. You'll find you get a lot of mileage from a single sheet. โธป Can I layer multiple gold strips on one nail? Yes, and it looks great. Two strips placed close together give a more graphic, architectural feel. Just make sure you seal all strips under a generous top coat layer for the best result. โธป What other colours work with the gold strips? Gold strips look stunning on deep, rich bases โ€” think dark plum, forest green, deep navy. They also work beautifully on a nude or cream base for a warmer, more delicate effect. Black just happens to be the most high-contrast pairing, which is why it's our favourite. โธป Do I need to apply the strips before or after curing? After curing your base gel wrap โ€” but before your final top coat layer. The sequence is: apply gel wrap โ†’ cure โ†’ apply gold strip โ†’ seal with top coat โ†’ cure. This ensures the strip is locked in under the top coat for maximum durability. ย  ย  Written by Laura & Bek Founders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creating semi-cured gel nail wraps and UV-free gel nail wraps designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home.

Gel Nail Wraps vs Press-Ons: An Honest Side-by-Side Comparison

The at-home nail world has exploded over the last few years. Two of the biggest categories โ€” gel nail wraps and press-on nails โ€” get compared all the time, often by people who haven't tried both. So we wanted to write the honest version. Not ours is better. Just โ€” here's what each actually is, what each does well, what each doesn't, and who each one is for. Make the call from there. The quick verdict If you just want the headline: - Press-ons โ€” best for quick, one-night looks. Reusable. Fast off and on. Less of a "second skin" feel.- Gel wraps โ€” best for everyday wear. Sit flush to your natural nail. Last 1โ€“2+ weeks. Look and feel like a salon manicure. If you want the full picture, read on. What each one actually is A bit of context, because the terms get used loosely. Press-on nails Press-ons are pre-shaped plastic or acrylic tips designed to sit on top of your natural nail. They're attached using either:- Sticky tabs (temporary, easier to remove)- Nail glue (longer-lasting, harder to remove) They're sold in sets of 24+ tips so you can pick the ones that match each finger's size and shape. Gel nail wraps Gel wraps are flexible strips of real gel that bond directly to your natural nail. They come in two formats:- Semi-cured โ€” needs a UV LED lamp to fully harden- UV-free โ€” fully cured during manufacture, just peel and press They sit flush with your natural nail rather than on top, which is why they look and feel like a salon gel manicure. Photo: ink Jelly Semi-cured Gel Nails Pros and cons of press-on nails Press-on pros - Fastest application โ€” 5โ€“10 minutes total- Reusable โ€” many press-on sets can be worn multiple times- Length options โ€” easier to get dramatic length without growing your nails- Easy to remove โ€” peel off with warm soapy water- Great for one-off events โ€” weddings, parties, photoshoots Press-on cons - Sit on top of your nail โ€” can look chunkier, especially up close- Less durable โ€” generally last 1โ€“7 days depending on glue strength- Higher lift / pop-off risk** โ€” daily activities can knock them loose- Can feel "thick"** โ€” some people find them uncomfortable- Glue can damage your natural nail โ€” especially if removed forcefully- Limited custom fit โ€” pre-sized tips don't suit every nail shape Pros and cons of gel nail wraps Gel wrap pros - Real gel โ€” looks and feels like a salon manicure- Sits flush with your natural nail โ€” no chunky overlay- Longer wear โ€” 7โ€“10 days (UV-Free) or 2+ weeks (Semi-Cured)- Strong and flexible โ€” designed to handle real life- Better for nail health โ€” when removed properly, no damage- Custom fit โ€” wraps adapt to your nail shape, no "wrong sized tip"- Huge colour and finish range โ€” chromes, glitters, classics, jewel tones Gel wrap cons Slightly longer application โ€” UV-Free: 10 minutes; Semi-Cured: 15โ€“20 minutes- Semi-Cured needs a UV lamp โ€” small one-off investment- Less suitable for very dramatic length โ€” wraps work with your natural nail shape, not on top of it- Slight learning curve โ€” first application takes practice (next ones are quick) Customer Photo: Purple Cats Eye Semi-cured Gel Nails Side-by-side at a glance Press-Ons | Gel Nail WrapsApplication time: 5โ€“10 mins | 10โ€“20 minsTypical wear time: 1โ€“7 days | 7 days (UV-Free) / 2+ weeks (Semi-Cured)Reusable: Often yes | NoSits on top of nail: Yes | No (sits flush)Custom fits your nail: Pre-sized tips | Adapts to your shapeDamage risk on removal: Moderate (glue) | Low (with cuticle oil)Length options: Easy to add length | Works with your natural lengthLooks like salon mani: Often more obvious | Indistinguishable from salonCost per wear: Often higher (per day) | Generally lower (per day) Who's each one for? Press-ons might be your match if you: - Need nails for a single event (party, wedding, dinner)- Love rotating between dramatic styles weekly- Don't want long-term wear, just statement looks on demand- Want to keep your natural nails super short underneath- Like the reusability for cost savings Gel wraps might be your match if you: - Want a "set and forget" mani that lasts 1โ€“2+ weeks- Want nails that look and feel like a salon manicure- Prefer your nails to sit flush rather than on top of your natural ones- Care about nail health long-term- Want a wide range of looks (chromes, glitters, French, classic, statement)- Have an everyday lifestyle that needs durability โ€” typing, dishes, parenting, gym Genuinely โ€” many people use both It's not a one-or-the-other situation. Some of our customers:- Wear gel wraps for everyday- Pull out press-ons for a one-night statement look- Switch depending on the moment If your nail wardrobe has room for both, brilliant. They serve different purposes. Photo: Pastel Yellow UV-Free Gel Nails Cost over time A quick word on value, because it's a fair question. Press-ons - Per set: $10โ€“$40 (decent quality)- Wear per set: 1โ€“7 days- Cost per day of wear: roughly $2โ€“$6 Gel nail wraps (UV-Free) - Per set: $22 (or $16.50 if you buy 4)- Wear per set: 7โ€“10 days- Cost per day of wear: roughly $1.65โ€“$3.10 Gel nail wraps (Semi-Cured) - Per set: $22 (or $16.50 if you buy 4)- Wear per set: 2+ weeks- Cost per day of wear: roughly $1.18โ€“$1.57 For long-term value, gel wraps tend to come out ahead โ€” especially Semi-Cured. That said, if you're truly only using nails for occasional events, reusable press-ons can be competitive. Photo: Vixen Red Semi-cured Gel Nails and Aztec Gold Nail Decals The honest summary Press-ons and gel wraps both have a place. Neither one is universally "better" โ€” they're built for different jobs. If we had to summarise it in two lines: - Press-ons = costume nails. Brilliant for the moment, less designed for the marathon.- Gel wraps = real-life nails. Built to look and feel like the real thing, day in, day out. Pick the one that fits how you actually want to wear nails, not the one that sounds easier. Quick recap - Press-ons sit on top of your nail; gel wraps bond flush- Press-ons wear 1โ€“7 days; gel wraps wear 7 days to 2+ weeks- Press-ons are faster to apply; gel wraps are stronger and longer-wearing- Press-ons can be reused; gel wraps are a one-set use- Press-ons suit one-night looks; gel wraps suit everyday wear- Both can absolutely coexist in your nail wardrobe Ready to try gel wraps? Browse our full gel nail wrap collection โ€” or go straight to the range that suits you best: If you want the easiest entry โ€” our UV-Free range is fully cured, lamp-free, and applies in 10 minutes. If you want the longest wear โ€” our Semi-Cured range sits flush, lasts 2+ weeks, and feels like a salon manicure. Gel Wraps vs Press-Ons FAQs Do gel nail wraps look more natural than press-ons? Generally, yes. Because gel wraps sit flush with your natural nail rather than on top, they don't have the "lifted edge" or thickness that press-ons can have. Close-up, press-ons often look obviously applied. Gel wraps look like a salon manicure. โธป Are press-ons cheaper than gel wraps? Per single set, sometimes yes. Per day of wear, gel wraps usually come out cheaper because they last longer. A $20 press-on set worn for 3 days = $6.66/day.A $16.50 gel wrap set worn for 10 days = $1.65/day. For everyday wear, gel wraps deliver better value. โธป Which is gentler on natural nails? Gel wraps โ€” when removed properly with cuticle oil and patience. The main risk with press-ons is forced removal โ€” pulling them off when the glue is still strong, which can take a layer of your natural nail with it. Press-ons used with sticky tabs (rather than glue) are gentler. Either way, gentle removal matters more than the product itself. โธป Can I sleep in press-ons or gel wraps? Both, yes. Gel wraps are bonded directly to your nail, so sleeping is a non-issue. Press-ons can occasionally pop off in your sleep (especially if your hands rub on a pillow). It's not common, but it does happen. โธป Can press-ons handle daily life like dishes, gym, work? Some can โ€” but they're more prone to popping off mid-task than wraps are. If you're after nails that survive normal everyday wear without thought, gel wraps are designed exactly for that. Press-ons are better suited to a planned wear period (a weekend away, an event week) rather than daily life on autopilot. โธป What if I want longer nails than my natural length? Press-ons have the edge here โ€” they let you add length without growing your own nails. Gel wraps work with your natural nail shape and length. They can extend slightly past the tip, but they're not designed for dramatic extensions. If you want long nails for an event, press-ons make sense. If you want salon-quality manis on your real nails, wraps are the move. โธป Can I use both at different times? Absolutely. Many of our customers do. Gel wraps for daily wear. Press-ons for the occasional event. They're not in competition โ€” they just do different jobs. โธป Which is better for beginners? Both are beginner-friendly, but UV-Free gel wraps are arguably the easiest of all: - No glue mess- No lamp needed- 10-minute application- Hard to mess up If you've never done your own nails, UV-Free wraps are a brilliant entry point. Inside The Winter Nail Edit 2026: Five Curated Moods for the Cooler Month

The Winter Nail Edit is live. We've curated this year's winter range into five distinct moods โ€” each one designed for a different moment of the cooler season. One Edit is our always-here foundation. The other four are curated for this season โ€” and over time, some of these shades will earn their place in our always-available core, while others won't return until next winter. Here's what's inside, what each Edit is for, and how to build your winter mani wardrobe across them. A quick note on what's seasonal vs always available Before we dive in โ€” a small map. - The Velvet Nights Edit is our year-round core. These twelve shades have earned their place โ€” they're here all year because they're the ones you reach for again and again.- The Winter Muse, Midnight Frost, After Dark and Winter Layers Edits are curated for this winter. Some of these shades will graduate into our always-available core if they become customer favourites. Others will rotate out at the end of the season and return next winter. If a shade is calling your name, it's worth grabbing โ€” we don't always know which way it'll go. Photo: Mulberry Semi-cured Gel Nails The Winter Muse Edit Soft neutrals and understated tones, made for effortless styling. This is the Edit for the days you want polished without effort. Warm milky neutrals, dusty pinks, soft plums โ€” the kind of shades that go with everything in your winter wardrobe without competing for attention. It's the "elevated everyday" tier of the Winter range. Quiet, refined, and the kind of mani that gets compliments from people who can't quite put their finger on what's different about you today. What's in the Edit: - Berry Mixed โ€” soft layered berry undertones- Dusty Plum โ€” gentle, dusty, sophisticated- French White โ€” the eternal classic, here for the cooler months- Mauve Gold Dip โ€” dusty mauve with a hint of gold warmth- Moon Child โ€” dreamy, pearly, cool-toned- Peach Sunday โ€” warm transition neutral Perfect for: the office, school runs, dinners with the in-laws, that one girlfriend who notices everything. Anyone who wants their nails to feel finished without feeling done. Photo: Mauve Gold Dip Semi-cured Gel Nails The Midnight Frost Edit Cool shimmer and icy finishes inspired by crisp winter nights. The cool-toned, shimmery Edit. Volcanic, frosted, sparkling โ€” these are the shades for the months when the air bites a little and you want your nails to catch every bit of light that's available. If Winter Muse is your "quiet refined" register, Midnight Frost is your "I want a bit of magic in my mani" register. What's in the Edit: - Crimson Sparkle โ€” warm red with a hit of shimmer- Deep Sea Cats Eye โ€” magnetic, moody, oceanic depth- Opal Freeze โ€” pearlescent, almost iridescent- Sangria โ€” rich plum-wine with shimmer- Sprinkle Glow Snow โ€” soft sparkle, lighter base- Volcanic Speckle โ€” moody base with subtle scattered shimmer Perfect for: end-of-year parties, dinner dates, weekend brunches, anytime you want a little glow without going full sequin. The kind of mani that photographs beautifully under any light. Photo: Opal Freeze Semi-cured Gel Nail Wraps The After Dark Edit Bold winter shades for nights that call for something a little extra. This is the Edit for the days you want your nails to *say something*. Deep jewel tones, oceanic blues, midnight greens โ€” the colours that look incredible against a silk blouse, a chunky knit, or a glass of red. It's the smallest Edit (5 shades) but the most considered. Each one earns its place. What's in the Edit: - Amethyst Eclipse โ€” deep purple with subtle aurora shift- Cobalt Blue โ€” a true, glossy, statement blue- Forest Green โ€” rich, slightly mysterious, gets compliments every time- Jade Eclipse โ€” emerald-toned green with depth- Sapphire Eclipse โ€” deep ocean blue with shimmer Perfect for: date nights, work events where you want to feel powerful, evenings that started as "casual dinner" and ended somewhere else entirely. Photo: Jade Eclipse Semi-cured Gel Nail Wraps The Winter Layers Edit (UV-Free) Rich, grounded tones inspired by winter layering. This Edit lives in our UV-Free range โ€” fully cured, lamp-free, peel-and-press. Same gel quality, faster routine. Made for the days when you want a fresh set in 10 minutes flat. The palette mirrors what you're already wearing this winter โ€” burnt umber, charcoal, moss, eggplant, bottle green, royal blue. Earthy, layered, grounded. What's in the Edit: - Burnt Umber โ€” deep mahogany-oxblood- Charcoal โ€” the cool-girl alternative to black- Moss โ€” earthy, grounded, surprisingly versatile- Eggplant โ€” regal, jewel-toned- Bottle Green โ€” a vintage classic- Royal Blue โ€” a wardrobe-staple deeper register Perfect for: anyone new to gel wraps, frequent travellers (no lamp to pack), busy weeks when you want salon-quality without the time investment. Photo: Bottle Green UF-Free Gel Nail Wraps The Velvet Nights Edit Your always-available winter classics Now to the foundation. The Velvet Nights Edit isn't a seasonal drop โ€” these are the twelve shades we keep stocked all year because they're the ones you reach for again and again. All in our Semi-Cured range, all $19.95. If the four seasonal Edits above are this season's curated discovery, Velvet Nights is the wardrobe of winter shades you can always come back to. (Many of these earned their permanent spot by being seasonal favourites โ€” and any shade in the seasonal Edits above could be next.) What's in the Edit: Cherry Red, Classic Burgundy, Cosmic Chic, Lavender Whip, Mulberry, Navy Pool, Night Black, Olive, Opal Glitter, Purple Cats Eye, Secret Garden, Violet Luster. A red for the days you want a red. A black for the days you want a black. A green that's grown-up. A plum that goes with everything. The kind of range that makes building a "nail wardrobe" actually possible. Photo: Olive Semi-cured Gel Nail Wraps How to build your winter mani wardrobe If you're not sure where to start, here's how we'd play it: - Pick one Velvet Nights classic as your reliable go-to (Mulberry and Classic Burgundy are perennial winter favourites)- Add one seasonal shade that excites you โ€” go bold with After Dark, soft with Winter Muse, shimmery with Midnight Frost, or earthy with Winter Layers- Rotate. A fortnight in one. Fresh set in the other. Repeat. Two sets covers about a month of fresh manis. Three covers six weeks. The seasonal shades only come around once a year, so grabbing a couple to layer in alongside your Velvet Nights staple is genuinely the move. Photo: Cobalt Blue Semi-cured Gel Nail Wraps Quick recap - The Winter Muse Edit โ€” soft neutrals, effortless styling (seasonal)- The Midnight Frost Edit โ€” cool shimmer and icy finishes (seasonal)- The After Dark Edit โ€” bold jewel-toned statements (seasonal)- The Winter Layers Edit (UV-Free) โ€” earthy grounded tones, lamp-free (seasonal)- The Velvet Nights Edit โ€” your always-available winter classics Four moods for this season. Or explore the complete gel nail wrap collection across all seasons. Or if you're new here, our Semi-Cured Starter Kits and UV-Free Starter Kits bundle everything you need to start. The Winter Nail Edit FAQs How long are the seasonal Edits available? The four seasonal Edits โ€” Winter Muse, Midnight Frost, After Dark and Winter Layers โ€” are curated for the cooler months. Once winter wraps up (usually around early September in Australia), each shade goes one of two ways: it either graduates into our always-available core, or it rotates out and returns next winter. We don't always know which will be which โ€” that's partly decided by which shades you love most. If something is calling your name, it's safest to grab it now. The Velvet Nights Edit is always available year-round. โธป What's the difference between Velvet Nights and the seasonal Edits? Velvet Nights is our always-stocked core โ€” 12 winter classics that earn their place every year. The other four Edits are curated seasonal drops โ€” fresh shades and finishes designed for this specific winter, available for a limited time. Think of Velvet Nights as your wardrobe staples. The seasonal Edits are the runway pieces that come and go. โธป Can I mix shades across different Edits? Absolutely โ€” and we'd recommend it. A common combination:- One Velvet Nights classic (your reliable go-to)- One seasonal shade (your "for now" mood) Rotate between them across the season. Two fresh sets cover about a month. Three cover six weeks. โธป Which Edit is best for beginners? If you're brand new to gel wraps, the easiest entry points are: - The Winter Layers Edit (UV-Free) โ€” no lamp needed, 10-minute application, peel and press- The Winter Muse Edit โ€” soft neutrals that are forgiving with imperfect application Either is a beautiful place to start. โธป Do I need a UV lamp for these shades? For four of the five Edits โ€” yes: - Velvet Nights, Winter Muse, Midnight Frost, and After Dark are all Semi-Cured wraps that need a UV LED lamp. For The Winter Layers Edit (UV-Free) โ€” no lamp required. They're fully cured during manufacture. If you don't have a UV lamp yet, our Semi-Cured Starter Kits include everything you need in one box. โธป How long do they last? - Semi-Cured wraps (most of the Winter Edit): up to 2+ weeks- UV-Free wraps (Winter Layers Edit): 7โ€“10 days For tips on getting the longest wear from any set, our Why Are My Gel Nail Wraps Lifting? 7 Quick Fixes post covers everything. โธป Will the new seasonal shades come back next year? Some will graduate into our always-available core (so they're with us all year). Others will return next winter. A small handful may retire altogether if they don't find their audience. Customer favourites genuinely shape this โ€” the shades you love most are the ones most likely to earn permanent status. If a specific shade has captured you, this is your best window to grab it. โธป What about the Autumn Edit shades I love โ€” are they still available? Once a seasonal Edit ends, most shades come off the site once sold out. A handful of all-time bestsellers move into the always-available core (which is how the Velvet Nights Edit grows year by year). The best way to keep favourites available across seasons is to grab a set or two while they're live โ€” or join our newsletter to hear before each seasonal Edit changes over. โธป Are the new shades vegan and cruelty-free? Yes โ€” every shade in every LA-BEK Edit is vegan and cruelty-free, across both Semi-Cured and UV-Free ranges. Written by Laura & BekFounders of LA-BEK, an Australian brand creating semi-cured gel nail wraps and UV-free gel nail wraps designed to make salon-quality nails simple, at home.

Not All Nails Are the Same: Why Yours Might Behave Differently

You and your best friend both order the same set of wraps. You both apply them at the same time. Hers last 14 days without a single lift. Yours start coming away at the corners by day five. Same product. Same prep. Same conditions. Different results. If this has happened to you, the answer is rarely "you did it wrong." It's almost always your nails. Just like skin, just like hair โ€” your nails have unique characteristics that influence how every product performs on them. Some nails are naturally oilier. Some are more porous. Some are thinner, more curved, more ridged. There's nothing wrong with any of these. They're just yours. And once you understand which type you have, you can tweak a few small things to get the most out of your manicure. Here's a friendly run-through of the most common nail types โ€” and what each one means for your at-home gel nail wrap routine. The 6 most common nail types (and what they mean for your wraps) ย  ย  1. Naturally oily nails What it looks like: Your nails always seem a bit shiny, even right after buffing - Polish, gel, and wraps tend to lift sooner for you than they do for friends - Hand cream feels like it absorbs faster than average Why it happens: Some people produce more sebum (natural oil) through the nail plate. It's almost always genetic. It's not a flaw โ€” it just means your nails don't naturally provide a "dry surface" for products to bond to. What helps: - Wipe each nail thoroughly with rubbing alcohol or a prep wipe right before applying โ€” twice if needed - Avoid hand cream or cuticle oil for at least 30 minutes before application - Press your wrap edges down extra firmly (the rubber end of our Precision Tweezers is your friend here) - Keep your set fresh โ€” oily nails do better with shorter wear cycles than 2+ weeks - You can slightly buff the top surface of your nails before application ย  ย  2. Porous nails What it looks like:- Your nails seem to absorb water quickly when you wash up- They feel slightly soft after long showers or baths- Polish and wraps can sometimes lift evenly across the whole nail rather than just at edges Why it happens: Porous nails have a slightly more permeable nail plate. They take in moisture, oils, and even pigment more readily than less porous nails. It can be genetic, or it can be temporary โ€” frequent acetone use, dehydration, or harsh soaps can all increase porosity. What helps:- Apply your wraps when nails are completely dry โ€” not straight after a shower or hand wash- Wait 5โ€“10 minutes after wiping with prep alcohol before applying- Build a daily cuticle oil habit between manis to support overall nail health- Limit your acetone exposure (we recommend gentle peel-style removal anyway) ย  ย  3. Dry or brittle nails What it looks like:- Your nails crack, peel, or break more easily than you'd like- The free edge often looks rough or splits- Cuticles feel papery or tight Why it happens: Dry, brittle nails are most often caused by lack of moisture โ€” either due to age, hand washing, harsh cleaning products, or frequent gel/acrylic wear without breaks. Genetics and hormonal changes (like perimenopause) can also play a role. What helps:- Build a proper cuticle care routine with daily oil โ€” this is non-negotiable- Take breaks between sets every now and then- File gently from side to centre, never sawing back and forth- Use a moisturising hand cream after every hand wash- Consider a strengthening base under your wraps if it persists- Use our cuticle balm to help nourish and strengthen your nails ย  ย  4. Thin or weak nails What it looks like:- Your nails bend more than you think they should- They feel "soft" rather than firm- They struggle to grow past the fingertip without breaking Why it happens: Thinner nails can be genetic (just your natural nail thickness) or developed over time from frequent gel/acrylic wear without recovery breaks, low-protein diet, or certain medications. Pregnancy and hormonal shifts can also temporarily change nail thickness. What helps:- Take rest periods between sets โ€” even 1โ€“2 weeks every couple of months helps- Keep nails shorter while they recover- Cuticle oil daily (yes, again โ€” it really is the answer to most things)- Eat enough protein and consider a biotin supplement (chat to your GP first)- Use our cuticle balm to help nourish and strengthen your nails ย  ย  5. Ridged nails What it looks like:- You see fine vertical lines running from cuticle to tip- Sometimes there are horizontal indentations too Why it happens: Vertical ridges are very common and usually completely normal โ€” they often become more pronounced with age, like fine lines on your face. Horizontal ridges (called Beau's lines) can sometimes indicate health changes and are worth mentioning to your GP if they appear suddenly. What helps:- A very gentle buff to smooth the surface before applying โ€” don't over-file- Vertical ridges don't usually affect wrap performance much, but a smooth surface makes for a better seal- For deeper ridges, a ridge-filling base coat can help create a more even surface ย  ย  6. Naturally curved nail beds What it looks like:- Your nails curve downward at the sides (some are flatter, some quite arched)- Wraps sometimes feel tight or pull at the edges Why it happens: Nail bed shape is just genetic. Some people have flatter beds, others more pronounced curves. Both are completely normal. What helps:- Warm your wrap slightly between your fingers before applying โ€” it makes the gel more pliable- Stretch the wrap gently as you apply (especially with semi-cured wraps)- Press from the centre out toward the sides- Use the rubber end of your tweezers to firmly press the curved edges ย  ย  How to figure out your nail type Three quick at-home tests: The shine testAfter washing your hands and patting dry, look at your bare nails in good light. Do they still look shiny without polish? You may have naturally oily nails. The water testSoak your hands in warm water for 5 minutes. If your nails feel noticeably soft or "spongy" afterwards, you likely have more porous nails. The flex testGently press the side of your nail. If it bends more than you expect, your nails may be on the thinner or weaker side. You might be a mix of more than one โ€” most people are. The point isn't to put yourself in a box, it's to understand what your nails are telling you. ย  What this means for your manis The biggest takeaway: if your wraps don't last as long as your friend's, it's almost never personal. It's biology. But there's a lot you can do once you know what you're working with: - Oily nails? More prep wiping, less hand cream pre-application- Porous nails? Dry application surface, daily cuticle oil between sets- Dry/brittle nails? Cuticle oil, gentle filing, breaks between sets- Thin/weak nails? Rest periods, shorter nail length, protein in your diet- Ridged nails? A light buff, possibly a ridge-filler- Curved nails? Warm the wrap, stretch gently, press firmly Most people see a noticeable improvement in how long their wraps last just from making one small adjustment based on their nail type. ย  ย  When to talk to a professional If your nails have changed suddenly โ€” colour, texture, growth pattern, or shape โ€” it's worth mentioning to your GP. Healthy nails reflect overall health, and sudden changes can occasionally indicate things worth checking on. Most of the time it's nothing, but it's always better to ask. For ongoing concerns about nail strength or persistent issues, a qualified dermatologist can give you personalised guidance. ย  ย  Quick recap - Your nails are genuinely unique โ€” texture, shape, oiliness all vary person to person- The 6 most common nail types each have different "best practice" tweaks- Most lifting or short-wear issues are about working with your nails, not against them- Daily cuticle oil supports almost every nail type- Sudden changes are worth mentioning to your GP Your wraps don't need to behave the way someone else's do. They need to behave the way yours should. ย  ย  Want to support your nails between manis? A few signs:- Your nails look shiny even after buffing- Polish or gel tends to lift earlier for you than for friends- Hand cream seems to absorb faster than average If two or more of these sound like you, naturally oily nails are likely. Extra prep with rubbing alcohol before applying will make a real difference. โธป Are porous nails bad? Not at all. Porous nails are just a bit more permeable โ€” they take in moisture and products more readily. It can be genetic, or it can be temporary from things like:- Frequent acetone exposure- Long, hot showers and baths- Harsh hand soaps- Dehydration Building a daily cuticle oil habit between manis is one of the simplest ways to support porous nails. โธป Why do my gel nails lift faster than my sister's? It's almost always nail biology, not user error. The most common reasons one person's wraps lift sooner than another's:- Naturally oilier nails (less product grip)- More porous nail plate- Curved nail bed (wraps pull at edges)- Daily habits (more hot water, dish washing, gym) Once you identify your nail type, small tweaks in prep and application usually solve most of it. โธป Can my nail type change over time? Yes โ€” and it often does. Things that can change your nail characteristics:- Age โ€” nails often become slightly drier and more ridged over time- Hormones โ€” pregnancy, perimenopause, and thyroid changes all affect nails- Diet โ€” protein intake, biotin, and overall nutrition show in your nails- Lifestyle โ€” frequent water exposure, gel wear without breaks, harsh chemicals A change isn't necessarily a problem, but it's worth tweaking your routine to match. Should I take breaks from gel nail wraps? Not strictly required โ€” gel nail wraps are gentler on your nails than salon-applied gel polish or acrylics, especially when you remove them properly. That said, if you have:- Naturally thin or weak nails- Recently noticed any peeling or fragility- Been wearing wraps continuously for several months A short break (1โ€“2 weeks every few months) is a lovely reset. โธป Will my ridged nails affect how my wraps look? Vertical ridges (the most common kind) usually don't affect wrap performance noticeably. A very gentle buff before applying creates a smoother surface for the wrap to sit on. If your ridges are deep, a ridge-filling base coat can help create an even canvas. If you've suddenly developed horizontal ridges (lines running across your nail), it's worth mentioning to your GP โ€” sometimes these reflect a temporary health change. โธป Are gel nail wraps suitable for weak or damaged nails? In many cases, yes โ€” they can actually help by adding a protective layer over fragile nails. A few things to keep in mind:- Choose semi-cured wraps for added strength and structure if your nails are particularly weak- Use UV-free wraps for short-term flexibility- Always apply cuticle oil daily- Take occasional rest periods to let nails recover If your nails are visibly damaged or peeling significantly, it's worth letting them recover for a couple of weeks before applying anything new. โธป What's the most important thing I can do for my nails (regardless of type)? If you take one thing from this post โ€” cuticle oil. Daily. Healthy cuticles support healthy nails. They reduce lifting at the edges, slow nail breakage, and improve overall nail strength regardless of your nail type. Pop a Cuticle Oil Pen by your bedside table. One stroke per nail before bed. That's it. The difference after a few weeks is honestly remarkable.
